question new to mac

ok i have used p2p sites with windows based pc's , now I am using Mac and I keep hearing that no virus protection is needed. If you are sharing pics or whatever is legal and someone puts a virus in it wouldn't you need an anti-virus program ? In order to keep using software like p2p's? Hope that made sense..thanks in advance

Hi everybody, I'm a new mac user and I love that there are forums, and it seems like a lot of people looking to help out by sharing their opinions and experience. As far as this p2p topic I've looked at many forums, and like many other topics, I've come across atleast thirty one word answer responses. Though I don't assume to influence what people write on the internet, I do assume these threads are intended to be helpful. In that context I have to say that the one word opinion posts without backup or reasoning are about as useful as a poopy flavored lolly pop. While shouting the names of your favorite software is fun, I can get google to do the same thing, it doesn't give experiential knowledge. I think I've seen 90% of the opinion posts do the same thing, and I could just as easily post "slarty bartfarst FTW!" and be just as helpful. No offense intended to anyone, but I'd love some real info. One word posts naming your top choice are considered opinions, but they aren't educated ones. You're mac users... you're better than this. :):apple:

Vuze- Because it doesn't make my ISP throttle me, it has an inbuild player for most files, has a nice legal p2p network, has torrent searcher built in, and can convert video files as you download them.

Thanks appleguy!! I wanted to share a site that is very comprehensive with info about p2p for mac. It gives you the details not of the program variety, but what you might really be looking for. It doesn't review every program but it gave me a great basis for understanding what to look get for what I need.

there are tons of p2p apps. I use Vuze but it is fairly resource intensive. If you need to conserve memory and CPU then i would recommend utorrent.

Yeah, no joke. I use it too, beacuse it has so many options and configurability, but it's gotten to the point where the disk I/O load is so high on a 5400rpm laptop drive that I can't do anything else with the machine while Azureus is running. That's what overnight downloading is for. :) OTOH, I do batch torrents a dozen plus at a time.

Is there a uTorrent version for the Mac now? I have used it on the PC, and I love it, because it's quick and simple. All I want is the ability to dump files into a folder, limit UL/DL speeds, and set seeding rules (i.e. stop seeding when ratio is 1.2 so that all files have a shot at my upload).

I may give Transmission a try, as Azureus is up to the minute or more starting times, as much as I love Azureus/Vuze, taking longer than my entire computer to start up is not so cool.
