Any good free open-ended space sim games?

I'm looking for Mac-friendly (and Linux-friendly, optionally) space sim games, the kind where it's open-ended, and you can upgrade your ship, mine from planets, engage in dogfights. Doesn't necessarily need to be an online game, vs. AI is fine. Any suggestions?

Escape Velocity: Nova is a pretty good game with quite a few nice mods available. vs AI.

PS, actually I was looking for something more like Privateer, FreeSpace, that sort of thing. But open-ended.

I know you've ask for free but I have to recommend X3: Terran Conflict. It's available at a great price - £11.95 http://www.vpltd.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=249 and is about as open as you can get. The game is huge and offers you everything you could want provided you can put in the time 🙂

BTW, can you confirm that it runs smoothly on Mac? I've got a Mac Pro octo-core (2.66GHz), 16GB RAM, NVidia GeForce GT120.
