I've found that gmail's IMAP access doesn't work all that well if you've got a lot of emails to deal with, and it really doesn't handle the folders in mail.app all that well.

However, there were a couple of rules I set up in gmail that allowed me to use their POP3 access with mail.app, and both my mailboxes (mail & gmail when I can't get to my MBP) are synced up perfectly now.

I found those rules somewhere on this forum I believe; if anybody is interested though, I can re-post them in this thread.

This may be a stupid question, but at the moment I have mail.app accessing my Gmail through POP. It sounds like IMAP might be a better way to go to ensure that everything stays nice and sync'd, but if I change the settings in mail.app will it screw everything up? I've got some emails that I really can't afford to lose...

Sorry I'm a little puzzled by all this and any advice would be great.

In Mail.app, just create a new account to access your gmail via IMAP, leave your POP3 gmail account as it is.

Mail.app will go a retrieve all of the mail that you've ever received (and sent) via IMAP. Once you're satisfied that you've not lost anything, then you can just delete your POP3 gmail account (from within Mail.app of course), and continue using gmail via IMAP.
