Try restoring the device by putting it in DFU mode. If a restore doesn't work then chances are it is pooched

    As Staet stated,

How to get into DFU mode:

    - Connect your iPod Touch to your computer with iTunes open

    - Turn off your iPod Touch (hold down the power/sleep/wake button (on the top) until you see the red slider and slide the red slider across to the right).

    - Hold down the power/sleep/wake button (on the top) and the home button (on the front) for about 10 seconds

    - Release the power/sleep/wake button but continue holding the home button

    - iTunes should pop up and tell you it’s found a device in recovery mode

Sounds like it's time to go ahead & take that plunge -- get a new one.
