Any must have accessories for iMac?

You're welcome. I had my eyes on the backpack too, but was disappointed to see that its incompatible. But weren't the stands for the previous gen iMac and the current iMac the same? I am not able to figure out why its incompatible.

The stand on the 2012s is thinner, so the clips don't hold tight. It works for me, but my backpack is slightly tipping back. I'm looking forward to them releasing the standalone clips so I can "upgrade" my v1 Backpack :)

I think I'm also getting the HiRise for iMac (by 12so), if only to hide the Superdrive when not in use. Maybe even a hard drive or two. Not keys and a wallet, like the PR pics on their website, haha

Newbie

Hey, getting my base 27 iMac with upgrade to FusionDrive 1 TB soon and wondering a few things...

1. I read above to not install a virus software. Is this true? I know with my pc it was essential, but knew if you got the wrong one it could seriously slow the system. Any advice and if I need one do you know a good free one?

2. I just got time machine, and was wanting to use my external hard drive for an off site back up solution in addition. Should I make a backup with super duper right when I get the computer, or after I install and set everything up the way I want it?

3. I have office files I will need to access periodically. Should I get office for Mac, or use another solution... Anyone know where to get a discount on office for Mac?

Thanks!

Based on all the negative comments on here regarding the Magic Mouse, I have just ordered a Razer Orochi gaming mouse. I picked this one as it is Bluetooth, so should be able to use it on the iMac without any wires or additional USB receiver. Glad I chose the trackpad now rather than the Magic Mouse.

You should buy a good mouse and order a trackpad instead of apple's Magic Mouse (trust me, it's an awful mouse).
I just bought Logitech's MX Performance to play with it before my iMac arrives and I can't be more satisfied.

really? i love the mouse.. y dont you like the magic mouse and whats different about logitechs. Never used one myself

Don't install a virus scanner, if you need/want to scan use clamav

Or install it and keep it off most of the time. My company's VPN will not let me in unless it detects an antivirus program running with a current definition file.

Of course you can always do a touch command wherever that virus program keeps it's definition file as I doubt it is more sophisticated than the file date.

MagicThief - i just learned that the twelvesouth backpack is not compatible with the new iMac. Its on their website (look on the bottom right on the back shelf product page). I am not sure why its incompatible. But do take a look.

My two year old 12S backpack transferred to my new 27" just fine!

I'd consider a Thunderbolt based drive for back ups and storage. Some folks use Drop Box to store pictures and files etc which is what I do for the most part but I'm considering a Thunderbolt drive for back up and local storage.

I've bought a TimeCapsule for mine and will probably get a SuperDrive and tracker pad at some point. Might go for the 12south backpack when it's updated. Not sure yet.

I tried that last month....hated it.

May be because I got used to the touch scrolling on the Magic mouse but the mechanical wheel just feel very last century now. It is also not smooth when moving around.

Took it back and got a refund in the end.

so are you now using themagic mouse?

I need the trackpad in addition to the MM, I have so far found a D-Link USB 3 hub although I'm still looking for others. A Blu-Ray RW drive is also on the list of things, as I will be selling my 2011 27" with a USB 2 version included. That's about all I need as far as peripherals go...FCPX will be added to my software setup after the newbie is configured and in place.

Storage is taken care of with my existing Pegasus R4 unit, the 3TB Fusion drive in the newbie and my Time Capsule which back's up all three Macs.

I may be one of the few who likes using the Magic Mouse. My only gripe is that every one I've had periodically takes too much time to connect at startup.

I'm not a fan of the Apple keyboard, though. I prefer keys with more travel. I got the wired keyboard with my new iMac, but may replace it at some point.

subjective. I really really like the Magic Mouse, it IS a lovely mouse. however I went with trackpad plus alternative Gaming mouse (RAT7) because the magic mouse is no good IF you want to game.

I do also use your suggested Logitech mouse at work every day, its an average everyday capable mouse, not going to wow anyone and similarly probably wont have many complaints but you loose the side scroll ability.

You don't need any 3rd party antivirus app to keep a Mac malware-free, as long as you practice safe computing, as described in the following link. Read the What security steps should I take? section of the Mac Virus/Malware FAQ for tips on practicing safe computing.

If you still want to run antivirus for some reason, ClamXav (which is free) is one of the best choices, since it isn't a resource hog, detects both Mac and Windows malware and doesn't run with elevated privileges.

It is compatible with the 27". From their site:

Does the current Twelve South BackPack for Mac work with The New iMac (late 2012)?

BackPack 2 is compatible with the recently released 27-inch iMac, but is not yet compatible with the 21.5-inch iMac.

Since the new 27-inch iMacs now have a tapered desk stand, the position of BackPack on your iMac will depend on the insert you choose. With the included inserts, BackPack will sit at the bottom of the cable hole (#3 insert) or below it (#4 insert) when installed on the L-shaped base. If you would like to mount your BackPack above the cable hole, contact us at support@twelvesouth.com to request the #1 BackPack insert.

For the new 21.5-inch iMac, you can use the BackPack as a forward facing shelf for holding your SuperDrive or anything else you want easy access to by requesting the #1 insert. An insert to allow you to mount BackPack to the back of your iMac is not currently available, but we will be creating an insert specifically for the 21.5-inch iMac. If you would like us to alert you the moment the insert or the updated BackPack 2 is available for purchase, feel free to add your email to the list below.
