might we see new feature(s) for iOS 12 at the event? For older iPhones?
(Dark mode! Split screen!)

The only features that are held back are usually for the newer phones due to hardware requirements. Can‘t think of a significant feature that was held back and for older devices off the top of my head.

Yeah, I can't think of a time a feature held back to the release of the new phones related back to existing equipment. Otherwise there'd be no reason to hold back: "Here's an exciting non-new feature! We think you're going to really like it! (if you don't already)"

Pretty sure iOS 12 has been "feature complete" for a while. What 12.x adds, remains to be seen. (Siri Shortcuts has already been announced as coming later this Fall.)

Oh I think there will be new features, even for 12.0. Just not for any device that’s already in service.

It’s been a long time since they did that. A couple of times in the past they’ve slipped an additional built in app in, but it’s been a long time.

Only thing we are getting is Siri shortcuts.. Apple will def add something to the new phones to make us want to upgrade. They always do.. Better camera and faster processors isn’t going to cut it this year. They have something up their sleeve

If we haven't seen the features yet I highly doubt we'll see them in this release. Maybe in a .1 or .2 update, but I don't think we'll see it in the first version of iOS 12, unfortunately.

It's highly unlikely. Dark mode for example will also need developer support, just like in MacOS. This is the reason they have a developer conference so that developers have time to get to grips with the new tools and get their apps ready for the official launches a few months later.

Gurman at Bloomberg confirmed split screen for 6.5".
Actually it says display content side by side not split screen. There were some mock ups based on this rumour, it just means the app dramatically changes its layout in horizontal mode to use the space better. Not two apps at once. Could be wrong.

You're right, Gurman confirmed this on Twitter.
