*you* might find them bloatware, but considerably more people use them than use the programs that come pre-installed on a typical Windows PC.

If I weren't about to buy Final Cut Studio 2, I'd have hung on to iDVD and iMovie as an "average" Mac user.

I still held on to iPhoto because for some inane reason Aperture isn't included in Final Cut Studio 2. And iWeb will be useful with my MobileMe account for casual stuff.

Also, by comparison, look at what a piece of junk Windows Movie Maker is compared to iMovie? That thing is a hell of a lot more like bloatware than iLife.

no bloatware? I found myself deleting half the Ilife crap that came with it. Iphoto? get aperture. garageband? idvd and imovie?

To be honest, I'll use the latter 3 programs about once every 3-4 years. Get your mac, it's a wonderful machine, but really think about what you're going to use and do a fresh install with only those programs you really need installed.

iLife apps aren't part of the OS though.

they may be preinstalled, but first thing i did was boot my mac pro off the leopard install disc

ilife is not bloatware, it does not run in the background when not called upon, nor bring up annoying pop-ups every time you try to do something.

its simply a basic "starter" kit for the majority of the community that use macs, which is "general use people". there are WAY more general use people than there are experts and thats why there is all of that software pre-installed.

IMHO anyways...

switching over..

and to think, just a few years ago i was you!

i bought an old iMac and just got addicted. I knew i was on to something, when a 500mhz iMac was quicker editing video than my 1.8Ghz PC - Imovie is very good, and I didn't have to upgrade to Final Cut until recently. I still go back now and again to get a simple job done fast!

I had PC and Mac for about a year, before finally trashing PCs altogether. With AppleTV, even my MediaCenter PC has gone now - on the spareroom scrapheap.

Personally, I always re-install the OS when it turns up. It's SO easy with a mac, that you really shouldn't worry - even if you've never used a mac before. Just don't miss that 'Customize' button, and choose what you want installed.

The bundled iLife software is all fantastic - just install what you're interested in.

To be honest though, if you're buying a Mac Pro - what's the minimum spec harddrive? 250GB? not going to be troubled by the bundled software now is it? bang it all on and have fun.

I promise in a year's time, you'll have forgotten about downloading drivers and Internet Explorer. They were dark days...

my switch is half-way complete

My switch is half-way complete, with my MBP serving as my entry into the Mac arena. I'm looking into switching out my desktop PC by the end of the year for a Mac Pro, unless someone wants to by the desktop from me now...
