A guy I work with bought one for his macbook, worked fine until the logic board on the machine gave out (unrelated prob, it was suffering from the sudden shutdown syndrome). I'll see if he's got the machine back and the 160GB drive is in it again.

Pretty sure the drive was bought in the UK.

Not only is the 5400.3 (2.5", 8MB cache, SATA-150) worth looking at but there is now a 7200.2 (2.5" 16MB, SATA) also due to come out.

That sounds promising.

I decided to broaden my search to include US stores, an came up with this:

Thank you. But are Hitachi drives as good as Seagate's?

Well I have a 5k80 in my powerbook 12" and it's fast enough, though the cache is smaller than the failed Toshiba drive that Apple took out.

I've always read good reviews of Hitachi stuff too. I'll need to do some more rummaging around for info before I make any decisions myself though.

The SATA version of the Hitachi one has been out (in the US at least) since July. The Seagate one arrived in August (I think). Check the forums here for reviews, as there are a number of people who have installed them. I think most people have been going for the Hitachi due to the price difference.
