So after many attempts of people trying to find a FOSS/private smartphone OS I heard of GrapheneOS. As far as I understand its Android without the Google code in it.

1-Can someone tell me how is this possible when Android is a Google project?
2-It has F-Droid(FOSS only app store) but what if I want to download non-FOSS apps like Twitter or Netflix? Will I have to install Google Play Store rendering the privacy attempt useless?
3-If GrapheneOS is Android with privacy and FOSS, why hasn't the FOSS community all jump on this platform since it is their answer to a long time of attempting to create a private and secure smartphone OS after Sailfish, Ubuntu Touch, and Librem?

I think hardly anybody jumped on it because we all already become dependent on apps and Google, whether intentional or not.

Basically Android without GMS just doesn't entice regular user adoption.

I guess they can try China, which is probably the only market that is used to Android without GMS.

If you think thats where it stops, I would use Google everyday. I suggest you research how much Google gather information on you. Did you know they used to read your emails?

How's everyone doing.
GrapheneOS is free of Google apps and services by default.
The goal of GrapheneOS is not to avoid Google, the project doesnt take the stance that they are evil and must be avoided at all costs.
It is based on AOSP which is open source. The project "degoogles" AOSP by changing default connections to Google and using their own first-party connections: although users have the choice to use google for those services.

GrapheneOS provides a compatibility layer for users that need google apps: the official google play services (3 apps) can be installed as regular (unprivileged) apps that are fully sandboxed.

Ive seen nothing indicating Google reads emails and though i have a Gmail account, it isnt my main email and i hardly use it.
I suggest if you dont want anyone collecting your data of any sort, throw away your smartphone.

That documentation doesn't look average Joe/Jane friendly, but it looks like this OS wasn't made for them either.

GrapheneOS is for everyone really. The web installer makes it easier to install than cli methods used by every other "custom ROM". And the matrix community is available to assist if need be.
