Yep,
I have to agree with most here. The cell phone is probably one of the most overrated tech gadgets to come along in a long time. I used to have one for the usual reasons: in case of emergency, for mobile communication access, so I could be reached if needed, etc.
After about 2 years it dawned on me that it wasn't worth it.
1. It cost me about $45 a month.
2. I already had a phone number at work and home
3. I almost never used it for emergency
4. People started calling me for the most frivolous reasons just so they could use their minutes. And since they knew I had a cell phone, some were insulted when I wouldn't answer it.
5. I've learned that I really like having some time when I can't be reached by anyone, like a bus ride or round of golf.
6. I realized how much I disdained people who became negligent in many ways in public because they were holding a cell phone up to their ear. I didn't want to become one of them.
I ended up getting rid of the damn thing and haven't missed it a bit. If I need to be contacted, people have a work phone, home phone, e-mail, snail mail, or candygram to make contact with me (damn, I would love to get a candygram if they still exist). If I really need to get in contact with someone, I have a prepaid phone card to use on pay phones in case of emergency. Not having a cell phone means $600 a year I don't spend. Heck, the way I look at it, I could update my iPod twice a year with the best model for that kind of coin. I get about 10-20 hours of use a week out of my iPod, I can't say the same for a cell phone.
That being said, I might consider getting a cell phone again if I got rid of my land line at home, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Now if Apple came out with a small portable iPod device which could do wireless texting in addition to playing music then I might consider changing....
