I can't understand why most people feel that they need to take calls in the middle of doing things like being at the supermarket or other daily activities and for gods sake, don't get me started on drivers with a phone in one hand.

I would argue that as a society, we've been trained to answer the ring/obnoxious voice/song whenever it goes off, just like Pavlov's dogs.

What truly annoys me is when someone says something like "I tried calling earlier, why didn't you pick up?". Never mind the fact that the telephone I pay for is for my own convenience, not anyone else's. Call me archaic.

Yep,

I have to agree with most here. The cell phone is probably one of the most overrated tech gadgets to come along in a long time. I used to have one for the usual reasons: in case of emergency, for mobile communication access, so I could be reached if needed, etc.

After about 2 years it dawned on me that it wasn't worth it.

1. It cost me about $45 a month.
2. I already had a phone number at work and home
3. I almost never used it for emergency
4. People started calling me for the most frivolous reasons just so they could use their minutes. And since they knew I had a cell phone, some were insulted when I wouldn't answer it.
5. I've learned that I really like having some time when I can't be reached by anyone, like a bus ride or round of golf.
6. I realized how much I disdained people who became negligent in many ways in public because they were holding a cell phone up to their ear. I didn't want to become one of them.

I ended up getting rid of the damn thing and haven't missed it a bit. If I need to be contacted, people have a work phone, home phone, e-mail, snail mail, or candygram to make contact with me (damn, I would love to get a candygram if they still exist). If I really need to get in contact with someone, I have a prepaid phone card to use on pay phones in case of emergency. Not having a cell phone means $600 a year I don't spend. Heck, the way I look at it, I could update my iPod twice a year with the best model for that kind of coin. I get about 10-20 hours of use a week out of my iPod, I can't say the same for a cell phone.

That being said, I might consider getting a cell phone again if I got rid of my land line at home, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Now if Apple came out with a small portable iPod device which could do wireless texting in addition to playing music then I might consider changing....

Having a cell phone with you at all times provides a sense of security. You're freed! I don't normally like taking incoming calls, so much so I have it on pager mode and I'm really really selective in who I answer on my cell.

If it's a cold call or a number I do not know, I won't answer. I'll only answer it if I've made prior arrangements through email with the caller. In my line of work, it adds a nice buffer.

What line of work would that be again?? ;)

Why, I co-ordinate hot-donkey porn photo and video shoots. :p

And sometimes partaking in them. Yikes! TMI.

Lacero, your funny as hell. Just had to say that. Anyway, we've had 2 lines for almost 2 years (waiting for the contract to run out) and have barely ever used them at all. Once I was locked out of the house and was able to call my boyfriend to have him run me the keys. At $60 a month for 2 years ($1140???) that really doesn't justify the expense. I could have broken the window and replaced it many a time for that! Planning to go prepaid after this, just want one cell to use if I want to make a call (i.e. the car craps out, etc). Thankfully my state is finally passing a law making cell phone use while driving illegal! One of my biggest pet peeves is those bimbos driving, on the cell phone, applying makeup, generally being a HAZARD to everyone else on the road. Yeesh!

Well i just left my phone in a cab after a night out (it fell out of my pocket) and so i don't really hold much hope of getting it back unless it was an honest cabbie:( Tended to use my phone a lot for keeping in contact with friends but looks like im gonna have to use the old land line for a bit until O2 can send me a new one

I rarely answer my cell phone if I am having a face to face conversation with someone.

I also never pick up call waiting. I find it rude that someone you're on the phone with says, oh, that is so-and-so, hold on a sec. , click, wait, ok, I'm back....
