With the numbers likely huge, I would release the # if it's good. Say apply has 50k preorders today, why not release a statement to that effect and gain the buzz?

I suspect it was a victim of a frantic "I ordered" thread corralling (like the "apple store down" threads). I too would be interested in a poll thread.
