You do realize that the 5c is essentially the same tech as an iPhone 5, right? If nothing changed in Apple's tradition, the iPhone 5 would still sell on September 20th, but at a $100 cheaper, as its always been.

There's a couple of differences this time around though. One, yes, the build quality is of cheaper plastic construction. But the second difference is that the 5c actually comes with a bigger battery, an improved FaceTime camera, and kept the iPhone 5c at 16GB. Doesn't Apple normally lower older iPhone models to 8GB after a new model is released? But anyway, having considered these differences, how much cheaper were you expecting the 5c to be exactly?
Last year, iPhone 4S dropped to 16 GB in stead of 8.

The current 4S is the first 4S ever to be sold with 8 GB.

Oh ok, got it. So basically, when an iPhone model becomes free on contract, it drops to 8GB. Yea, i see the iPhone 4 in 8Gb on walmart's site. Makes sense.

I haven't checked unlocked prices, but I'm pretty sure the 5 was $649 last week -- literally -- before the new model was announced. Now you can get a slightly upgraded version of the 5 for 85 percent of that price (I'm comparing the 16GB models).

You are missing the point. The iPhone 5 was $649 when it launched 1 year ago - it was also that price last week at the END of its lifecycle as the flagship phone.

If anyone bought an iPhone 5 last week then they are foolish. The resale price of an iPhone5 was less a week ago than at the time of launch.

What Apple sells a product for and what it is worth are not the same thing. Would you buy an iPhone 5 for $649 today? Of course not.

What hacks me off is Apple selling last years phone at this years price (and making it with cheaper materials). Compare the price of the 5C against the likes of the HTC One or the Galaxy S4 - both top end Android phones.

Compare the price of the Galaxy S4 today with the price of the S3 today. Technology moves on. Would anyone buy a Bondi iMac for the retail price it launched at today? Why not? It will still do everything it could when it launched.

It's not cheap because its an iPhone 5 in a plastic body. And since the iPhone 5 is being replaced by the 5c, the 5c is priced at what was supposed to be the lowered price; $100 cheaper. Can we build a bridge and get over it? Even Apple shareholders are freaking out which makes no sense.

I think when you've even got Apple Fanboys saying it's too expensive, it must be overpriced. It's just too close to the 5S and there is too much of a discrepancy in features between the two models. Essentially they are relying on people who have no idea what they're doing to buy the 5C. It just doesn't make sense, unless you really, desperately want an under-specced plastic coloured phone or your budget can't stretch an extra $100. And if that's the case perhaps you shouldn't be spending AU $800 on a smartphone in the first place. I think the 5S will sell OK, I just can't see the 5C shifting volume at those whack prices. I'm pretty sure they'll drop it 30% after a month or two.

Perfectly right! I don't think it will sell in china also if that's what they were trying to think. The 5S will be the one which will sell

I see your point now, ur right .. I really forgot that the 2nd year of the iPhone 5 price would be $549 but the problem is that once you say the iPhone has a plastic back, it gives an impression that it would be cheap ... Atleast not $100 less

MacRumors started that rumor. Apple doesn't have the capacity to make anything cheap.

As for now, the 5c is selling like candy.
