I’m sitting here waiting for my 16” to wake up my Philips monitor, so I wonder: what is this configuration where you have no problems with Catalina?

I don’t think I’ve got a bad unit. And as a general matter, I’m happy to pay the Apple tax if there was an Apple approved monitor I know I could buy that wasn’t $5,000. Moreover, the fact that the problems “don’t happen with every configuration” aren’t much comfort if you travel with your laptop and need to connect to random external displays.

Mine is connected to a dock all the time - no issues at all.
Same, no panics here, although I do get the 19W from thie Radeon in open lid mode with an external 38”...I hope that gets sorted as otherwise the 16 is great.

It's not necessarily your configuration or has anything to do with Apple tax or needing a $5000 monitor. It could be a specific issue with your computer or monitor. Do you think with the all the Windows computers out there no one has monitor issues? This doesn't mean Windows computers have some type of defect. This is one reason forums like this are so popular and yes they have Windows forums too. You list your problem in a new post trying to be specific as possible hoping someone knows the solution or maybe has had the same problem. If you have a Mac then you can also take it to the Apple store. Of course with our current disaster of a situation that isn't possible but it will clear up soon.

I don’t feel like I can justify spending that much money for that configuration right now as I would feel very frustrated if after waiting for so long a consistent update would get released.

What makes you think you'll feel different come the next MBP iteration? There's always something new on the horizon.

I'm still on a 2013 model and won't upgrade until I can no longer use it due to it getting too slow, breaks down, or can no longer run the software I need. Until then, any upgrade is one of desire rather than need.

Buy when you need/have to. Not when you want to.

I should have bought one in December but I kept saying to myself I didn't really need another laptop - I have a work Dell Latitude 7400 and for personal I have a 2011 15 inch MBP and a 2014 13 inch MBP, both of these Macs run fine, even the 2014 that is on Catalina. I also have a 2013 27 inch iMac that I use daily.

Costco is going to have $200 off the base 16 inch Macbook Pro again starting tomorrow so with my Costco Citi card it's tempting. Especially with Costco's 90 day return policy I could buy one and if a refresh is released at WWDC I could possibly return the 2019.

Then there's Amazon having the i9 16 inch MBP for $2499. I have an Amazon Prime card which is 5% cash back. If I buy through Amazon instead of Costco the price difference will be $350 (Costco is 2% cash back) however I will not have 2+2 extended Costco warranty - which is not the same as Applecare but it's better than nothing).

The paradox of choice will probably leave me not buying anything lol! I am tempted though, my first Mac was a 2003 15 inch Powerbook G4 and for a while I would always buy the latest gear just because I wanted to. The past 6 years though I got into the FIRE movement so I've been saving like crazy.

Absolutely zero issues with macOS Catalina here. I’m not saying you don’t have issues but I’m saying that not everyone has issues.

To be fair, I haven't used it.

But I've heard enough complaints on this and other forums to make me nervous enough to hold off on purchasing.

YMMV of course, but it was in these same forums that people said the Mac keyboards weren't broken either.

Or that the 15” i9 cooling system was fine. Apple has already admitted that Catalina’s development process resulted in a buggy product and has committed to changing it for the next release. That’s not something Apple does for every random problem.

Tiger direct has the base model now for http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6882457&CatId=4360 if you're interested...

Best Buy priced matched it for me... :)

Not quite sure what year 15" system you have, but the 16" was a nice upgrade from my 2018 15" MBP. It is a bit heavier (0.3 pounds) but no worse to carry around than the 15". And to me the keyboard makes up for any small weight difference.
It’s the 2019. It’s really about the keyboard. I’m a Mac jock but with my boss we’re writers and she likes the new keyboard, has the $$ and just wanted to bless me for my birthday which I’m grateful for. The new keyboard really is that good.

Are you referring to what Craig F said at last WWDC?

That's an interesting piece of info. Where did you get it from?

Thanks but Costco will have the base 16" for the same price $2099 starting Wednesday. I'm just trying to decide if I should get one now, or if I should get the i9 for $2499 at Amazon. Or if I should wait until a spec bump 2020 model lol.

Thats a great price, even undercuts the Apple refurbished ones. Tough choice for people going forward to get this or the 10th Gen. 13 inch MBP.
