Any recommendations for an external hard drive to use for Time Machine backups plus storage?

I just purchased my first Macbook Pro last month. I wanted to know whether I should be getting a USB-C or USB 3.0 based drive. I also wanted to ask whether an SSD would be preferable for this, or whether a fast enough traditional drive would do. Thanks!

G-Tech USB 3.0 2 TB desktop model at Apple has proven reliable, and at a good price point. I'm getting one for dedicated time machine back-ups.

Your right, very cool. I didn't realize they were available in sizes greater than 500G. Gets really pricey, really fast for me though. I'm a bit of a cheap bastard that way.
