Any Regrets for upgrading to El Capitan?

I wouldn't go so far to say it's not ready for main stream. Just because YOUR external DVD drive doesn't work 100% of the time, doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else. Granted I don't have an external bluray drive, as I replaced my internal DVD drive with a bluray drive in my late 2011 MBP, but I think you're over exaggerating your statement just a little.

Ok , maybe I am exaggerating a little. But still it's frustrating and searching the internet I am not the only one with this problem. Anyway I went back to Yosemite and all is well again so I regretted upgrading and that is the title of this thread since I started it.

100% disaster , eventually managed to get 1 mini back to Yosemite , the other just won't show a video signal on my tv or via the av amp - it's essentially useless all due to an os upgrade , el crapitan is garbage imo and the worst os apple have ever produced , total and utter crap. That's without the mail bug...

I have another mini in another room and that has the same video out bug too , and that's using display port to try and get round it .. worked fine in yosemite

HAS TO BE THE OS !!!

Hopefully they will get their act together in June with the next revision...

If same story I will just flip business to W10, have already been running W10 trial systems for several months, with zero issues.

Very much tiring of the annual update cycle, as it`s too much like rolling the dice, Apple is clearly incapable of releasing the desktop OS without a hoard of issues on it`s own tightly controlled hardware, and that I don't need.

I agree. Apple should not roll out a main OS each year. They don't get the bugs out until the next one comes out. That is not the way it should be. Every 2 years is much better. The next operating system is rumored to be named macOS. But nothing is final. I just hope it is not like El Capitan. That was the worst OS by Apple to date so to say as far as compatibility and able to run on all later systems.

I am thinking it may be El Capitan as well. I went back to Yosemite and everything is fine now. So El Capitan was not Apple's Best Accomplishment.

Exactly mirrors my experience 10.10.5 systems are flawless, update to 10.11 issue, upon issue. All with no resolution from Apple, with seemingly not even the ability to explain why.

No doubt 10.11 works adequately for the vast majority of casual users, given OS X`s footprint in the working environment, I don't have high hopes that these reoccurring issues will be resolved anytime soon. Another aspect is on upgrading hardware you can potentially be locked into an OS that breaks workflows with no resolution. For my/our needs this adds up to make OS X less attractive for business related systems. Not that Windows 10 is a flawless gem, far from it, equally it works reliably without issue, and many respects that`s what counts.

Well there are also not-so-casual users, like me - and I'm not alone, who happen to have a flawless experience with 10.11. In fact a better experience than with Yosemite.

Seriously, people need to be less sensitive it`s an OS, it does not work for all, nor do I suggest it`s broken for all The operative phrase here being "my experience" as you put it, nor am I alone with incurring significant issue with OS X 10.11

The point is that it`s randomised dependant on usage & hardware in Apple`s case this is unacceptable given Apple is a provider of premium products, has complete control over both hardware & software environments. All my negative expense is based solely on Apple hardware & software, not third parties.

Apple can do better than this, they choose not too, likely for the sake of sales & marketing and cost...

Concern is that it`s not necessarily one, issue, related to one system. IMO Apple is getting sloppier with each release of OS X, naturally people are going to vent if they are affected directly or indirectly. Nor does Apple`s hubris go down well with those who are incurring issue, given 10.11 was designed specifically to remedy issue. For an unspecified number of users it has done the absolute opposite, with Apple either unable or refusing to explain. Just how long does one wait for basic functionality such as; Mail, WiFi, Preview etc. to function as expected?

Anyway it`s all good, those that OS X works for I am happy for. I can wait and see a little more, ultimately hardware upgrades will dictate, if OS X works, all fine and good, if not then OS X is obviously not the solution.

I've experienced a significant increase in beach balls on my 2014 max-ed out iMac and 2012 MBP since upgrading to El Capitan. Worst upgrade experience since my 1984 Apple llc. El Capitan needs to go away, soon.

I have shifted my complete work flow and documents to my Yosemite partition 10.10.5 and erased El Capitan.
Yesterday, i had multiple freezes while trying to see if it was related to Safari.

For what i do - safari, mail, pdf reader,word and excel sometimes , Yosemite works just fine. I felt i was wasting time reading about the freezes and what solutions there were and worrying about it.

Now, no more updating OSs unless its necessary for a newly introduced killer workflow feature.

So El Capitan is still causing problems and it has had 4 updates since it came out. This is not good. It works for maybe half the people that install it. Sometimes it depends if your system has a SSD drive then you are more likely to be compatible however I have a SSD drive in my iMac and its would not allow me to use my DVD/Blu-ray drive which I use daily. I had to revert back to Yosemite. Its sad to see so many people had and still some do have problems with El Capitan. I sure hope that the new OS is better but one thing is sure I can't trust Apple to get it right the first time out. So i will wait until a few updates comes out and be safe than sorry later on.

Pretty much my logic, however I have been waiting to upgrade hardware for a number of systems, equally this then locks you into 10.11 🙄 Apple is starting to look rather inflexible right now, and absolutely frustrating...

Happy with Yosemite as it is smooth and fast on my older MBA. Given all the problems I keep reading about El Cap I think I'll wait and see how the next update pans out. I don't recall so many problems back in the day when Apple charged for updates. I could be wrong but it seems like now since they're free every new release is essentially beta.

Too many problems with El Cap to describe, even with the .4 release. My 2012 mac mini has been reduced to a Mac IIc with better graphics but zero speed.

After 10.11.4 boinked my system and my TM backup I had to do a fresh install. I did the internet restore which installed Yosemite.

I've stayed on it ever since and I've had zero issues. If 10.11.5 fixes the El Cap I may upgrade again but I'm not holding my breath.

my experience with mba mid 2013 i5, 4gb ram:
- Mountain lion: just a few video issues because the support of the new haswell cpu but by far the most stable os x for my mba.
- Mavericks: the first versions had a lot of bugs, 10.9.4 and .5 was the most stable updates, but in my opinion ML was better.
-Yosemite: the same experience than mavs just with a new face.
- El capitan: by far the worst, buggiest and slower OSX, the last update .4 freezes all the system (and i´m not the only one)

Every year a brand new os x with the same old issues...

I haven't noticed any issues using a retina mbp 2014. I'm also a web developer / dabble native development via react-native and safari extensions - but right now anything it's just hobby / learning / i needed it for my last job.

I think the usability of el capitan depends on how its being used and what it's being used on. Many people have had issues, I've heard that 10.11.4 did something to make the 2015 mbp freeze. The sheer diversity of issues (here and everywhere) make it seem like it's fairly complicated - it doesn't appear to be a one-size-fits all OS - but when someone asks if they should update? I think if was started collecting better data / analyzing differences / continue to recommend workaournds for these issues if you discover them.

I like the wiki at the top of this forum, but the reality is more like on a spectrum, and we'd need to create like a chart with MacBooks on one axis - software use / use combos on the other - and like a green / yellow / red color to symbolize what's working fully, partially, and completely broken, so that someone who's currently on the fence, or anyone really, can make a much more informed decision to this question

I'm on 10.11.3 and I'm staying there.

Had the "Black Screen" issue (what a nightmare) when I upgraded from 10.11.2 so I think I'll cut my losses and keep it at 10.11.3.

It seems fine for the most part but I have no need to upgrade any further.

Apple really needs to settle down and maybe upgrade the OS every two years...maybe after they test it properly next time. This yearly upgrade cycle isn't worth the trouble.

After EL Capitan update I have problems syncing my iPad Pro and iPhone with iTunes on my MacBook Pro. After update sync gets stuck on photos and then crashes. Was fine before update. Now I can not sync

The only regret I have now is opting back into the beta program.
Once the next update's due to be officially released, I'll probably opt out again.

Earlier this week my mini wouldn't show video on the tv it's connected to , this keeps happening , but only after I 'upgraded' to el crapitan.

Had to do a hard restart to show output again - and this is via display port - I've given up on the hdmi port

My other mini with Yosemite has none of these problems so it MUST be the OS
