There are only a couple of spiders over here that are venomous and the climate (even with global warming) doesn't really permit the survival of any tropical spiders in the wild.
You could try and identify it using the info on Uk safari

It does look like a bigun so I don't blame you for your reluctance to go near it.
 
Funny that this thread comes along right after I see a brown recluse sitting in the bathroom sink. :D

Tried to drown him, but he skittered away too quickly, so I grabbed a can of hairspray and sprayed him until his legs clenched up. He was about an inch and a half long.

Reminds me, I need to clean up my room a bit, so they'll have fewer places to hide. ;)
