The only thing that bothers me a little bit is the lack of third-party support, but that may be a blessing in disguise (no viruses and less distractions). I'm also not too fond of the Finder, and using Firefox on Windows has ruined my enjoyment of Safari somewhat, though I think it's a great RSS-reader. Networking between Mac and Windows.. well, I'm no expert but it works fine 80% of the time (On some machines I have problems).

For the rest, I've only been a Mac-user for a little over 13 months now, but I'm here to stay!

Since switching from my PC to Mac I have had no problems whatsoever with my imac. I am definitely glad I made the switch

Nope, it's shareware. What I'm asking for shouldn't cost a thing and should be built-in to the operating system. I'm not really worried (don't have to be when I'm not currently networked to anything) but I think Apple really need to re-examine how Macs network.

I second that. Being a good Network player is one of the most important features of any OS. IMHO!

Printer Woes

I'm a switcher and absolutely love everything about my new C2D MBP. Except...

The total inability to print wirelessly to my Canon ip4200 over the network (apparently Canon's drivers are are older ported drivers that only support USB). I tried PrintFab and didn't like it because it does not support maintenance functions or advanced print options.

Why aren't there native OS X drivers for printers such as mine? It's enough to make you scream. Not bad enough to make me regret switching, but nonetheless frustrating!

Completely agree.

It sucks. Especially when you work at different sites throughout the day. What a pain the way the Mac OS X works. It won't even remember which is the default printer that you use at each site.

However, one Network area that Mac OS X shines compared to Windows is sharing of your connection from WiFi to LAN and vice versa. It is so much easier and quicker to do with the Mac OS X.

You can plug the printer into to the AirPort Express USB port and do it that way - but that obviously involves an extra outlay on the airport express.

I had keyboard problems.
I heard weird loud noise which is not coming from the fan for sure
The hard drive needed fixing using disk utility (another Mac computer)

I am delighted to say I am very happy with the switch. I love my MBP and I love the Mac OS X even more.

In 1 month, I convinced 2 to buy MacBooks, 1 to buy 20" iMac and 1 to buy a 17'' MacBook Pro. They all love their Macs, except the 17" MBP because it didn't arrive yet.

This is the best thing I've ever bought and I am loving every second I spend in my Mac.

I actually always thought networking was one of the Macintosh strong points. We've had very easy-to-configure networks since like the 80s. They always just work. So what if you have to mount and unmount remote drives... this isn't that much of a sacrifice to get always-working, easy to use networking.

i agree with you, although the convenience of browsing remote machines without mounting them would be nice. not everyone with a mac is a power user like most of us here on MR.

i cant stand the fact that you have to mount to browse stuff on the network either... I also find windows explorer much better for file management than finder. finder just doesnt have enough options for me. that application "path finder" is pretty nice - i just wish apple would take some features from it

DAMN STRAIGHT! Apple should have this stuff smoothly integrated, polished, etc. But they don't! And it's pissing me off! And I am a longtime fan of Apple and OS X but after watching the Steve Balmer keynote today announcing Vista I have to say OS X looks more like a baby's toy  . Vista's smoothly integrated GUI, loads of deeply integrated features, etc seem to far surpass that of OS X. I hope I'm proved wrong with Leopard but I'm becoming more and more afraid I won't be

So far no big complaints except the stupid safari browser. It does not work with many websites. I have to use to firefox or camino to browse them.

Ahh, and the other, mac fanboys. They suck !!

I guess I never compared finder to explorer before, but I would have to say I prefer finder overall. It handles file copies, renames, and other file / storage tasks much better than explorer IMHO.

I find it comforting to leave work (Datacenter with 1000's of Windows, Unix, Solaris) boxes, and return to my primarily Macintosh network at home!

I switched and have no regrets. My mac is awesome. I feel like I am now using the computer rather than working on it. if that makes sense.

My only two gripes are:

1. I keep hitting ctrl+c or v for copy and paste and on the mac it is different. Not a big deal, just a habit i need to break or get used to.

2. I keep trying to double click the title bar of windows to maximize them. That minimizes them on a mac. Again, just a habit I need to break and get used to.

Im an unhappy switcher. I was forced to switch over and us a PC today...

All I can say is wow...

I was a PC/Windows user for the past 10 (or more) years and i made a switch to Mac/OSX mid this year. It requires someone to take the first step and I did that, even when all my friends try to stop me (they are Windows users and still are till now). Up till this moment, I have no regrets on switching to be a Mac/OSX user. I'm very happy about it coz:
1) Mac products is deifnately much mcuh more sexier than PC
2) OSX is definately much much more easier to use compare to Windows

I strongly recommand anyone out there who is still a Windows user to switch to OSX, unless u are a game freak.... hehe....

I got all excited and was about to go out and buy an airport express to use as a print server until I found that the ip4200 is one of the few Canon printers that has been reported NOT to work with the airport express:

Figures I have the model that won't work. :(
Thanks for the tip, though.
