Any value for us guys for temperature sensor? Can it only function while sleeping?

I hope you can set when it will make temperature test or even force it manually…
And they don’t make it like with Sp02 tracking where if you disable it for sleep checks you can’t start it manually without turning this setting back.

In the presentation it looked like you could view temperature trends, which might help indicate potential illness (fever) if you kept an eye on it. But that seems about the limit of its usefulness for men.

It wasn't clear to me how "real time" or significant the temperature trends were for that sort of tracking. Given that its functionality for women seems to be basically "hey, your watch thinks you ovulated a few days ago."

Am also interested in this. Would be nice for it to notify you of trends (like it does for other items) so you can maybe get a heads up you might be getting sick, but their website very clearly is saying it is for women's health.

EDIT: Just re-read on apple.com. It says: "Apple Watch Series 8 has an innovative new sensor that tracks your temperature while you sleep, so you can see changes over time. Cycle Tracking uses this data to provide a retrospective estimate of when you likely ovulated, which can be helpful for family planning. When combined with your heart rate and logged cycle data, you’ll get a detailed view of your menstrual cycle."

I take this as everyone will get the temp reading while you sleep and changes over time, but that cycle tracking uses it in more detail. So sadly no big benefit, but at least we can see how our temp changes over time.

I don't understand their wording. If it works for men as well, and tells me that my temperature has increased by 2 degrees, then I can use it as a sign of fever. But why no mention of this?

I'm sure it can simply track your temperature for fever (early covid detection?) or even to maybe help you with sleep issues (i.e. you're running too hot at night? 🧐?).

But here's the thing with such features, and the beauty behind Apple's logic in creating them. They appear with, seemingly, one purpose/app only (in this case ovulation). But then some developer out there says "Hey, I can use that to help people..." And suddenly there's several apps that use that feature to do things that didn't even occur to us when we heard about it.

I'm not in the medical field, but *possibly* this feature could be used to detect many different health issues.

Or maybe not. We'll have to wait and see.

While I don't think there are few immediate benefits, I'd the that this will change over time as third parties start to use the sensor data and build new capabilities into their apps.

I doubt one will be able to actually use it to “take my temperature” but the nightly tracking will be usable for things like infection or sickness indicators - but most likely have to wait for some future software enablement and possibly FDA testing. Although, i doubt it will ever get FDA certification for testing body temp. Like many other wearables that do body temp measurement mostly at night or at various times during the day, and thinks like the Oura ring they CAN and DO offer up delta change to basal readings to notify a user that they may be experiencing early signs of sickness, viral infection - covid, or stress or alcoholl consumption.
