books, like mail, stocks, chess (!), are part of the OS, and uninstallable (if there are workarounds to that, someone else will post); but i've learned over the years to just ignore those apps (i tuck EVERYTHING i don't want in launchpad into an 'extras' folder on a second page)...

The default apps are protected by System Integrity Protection (SIP), so you cannot easily delete them.

This article shows you how to disable SIP if you really want to make the effort. Then you can delete the app and reenable SIP. If it was me, I would not bother for the small space savings.

I know how to disable SIP. Unfortunately it’s not enough. As I mentioned, the reason I want to delete the Books app is because I want iTunes to handle my books. The Books app cannot be used to change a book cover. Also drag and drop to my iPads does not work. I need to use Calibre to change a book cover (and tags, though Books can now do this). Then I must use email or Airdrop to transfer to the iPad (which is a pain if you need to transfer a bunch of books at a time.)
So hiding the Books app does not solve my problem.
And by the way, I wonder what’s the real purpose of the Books app on the Mac. I have hundreds of books but I do my reading on my iPads. I Never read a book on my Mac. Ever. Do people read whole books on the Mac? I don’t mean short papers, I mean whole books with hundreds of pages.

I have installed iTunes 13.6.5.3 and now I want to delete the Books app in order to have iTunes handling my books. Is there any way to do it?
Open Get Info on a book you would like to be opened with iTunes. Then change Open with.. to iTunes and select to do it for all files like it.

Thanks but your suggestion will not work. The Books app must be deleted, otherwise the Books menu does not appear over the sidebar. Only Audiobooks is showing

I like the Books app ON MY IPADS. I also like, and use, Marvin. Moreover, all my books are epubs, not for kindle. Anyway, there are solution to almost every problem. I could use Calibre for tag and cover editing and then airdrop for transfer, but I prefer the simpler iTunes solution which, as I mentioned in my original post, does nor work if the Books app is not deleted.

Boot into Recovery and open terminal.

Disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) by typing this command (then pressing return):
csrutil disable

Disable Apple Mobile File Integrity (AMFI) checks by typing this command:
nvram boot-args="amfi_get_out_of_my_way=0x1"

After this, you can modify and delete the contents of /System/Applications

The kindle app is available ON IPADS.

up to you but Calibre automatically converts books to the correct format as it emails. You just set up your kindle email as accepting .mobi then every book you right click on and choose send to will be sent as a .mobi.

I’ve never had a kindle and have done all my ebook reading on iPhone and iPad. I used to use third party apps and tried the books app but with Calibre and the kindle app it is just much easier and quicker.

i agree with you on the books app on the Mac. The only thing I tried to use it for was to get mp3 audiobooks on my iPhone but for some reason it didn’t work.

Thank you but I think I should let Calibre email me the epub so I can open it in Books on the iPad. The Kindle app sends info to amazon when first opening a book, and I don’t like that.
