Any way to get SL's dock icon badge back?

One of things I hate in Lion is that small, pixelated round dock icon badge. I'd like to get it back to the SL style badge that was much easier to read.

Anyone know how to do this? I've looked everywhere but no one seems to know. :/

Surely this can be changed, right?

Unfortunately, no. The badges are set by code using the AppKit framework that ships with the OS. They changed the AppKit framework in Lion. So it cannot be changed.
