Any way to share a non-HFS external disk with AFP?

Is there any way to share a non-HFS (NTFS formatted) external disk over AFP?
I know its possible with SMB, but SMB is buggy and sometimes panics on unmount (supposedly should have been fixed in 10.5.5 but apparently not).
I am running 10.5.5.
