EICAR created a file to test signature based virus scanners, is there a "safe" file like this that can test that XProtect is working on my mac? Does XProtect notify you when it's database is updated?

this shows how to update xprotect and when it was modified
It works silently, you won't really know it's working or not unless you install malware, that it may or may not protect against.
