There really is no big change in phones now.
An iPhone 7 is perfectly fine and does 90% of what the newer iPhones do.

You’re not far wrong. I’ll be buying my wife a new phone for Christmas, but not because she wants or needs one really.

She’s perfectly happy with her iPhone 7 and under normal circumstances, she’s not interested in getting rid of it.

It’s only because she’s expressed an interest in having Animoji and a better camera, that I’ve decided to upgrade her.

...... I’ll guarantee you this though. As much as she’ll be happy with the new phone I get her, I’ll bet you pound to penny I get a telling off for buying her a new phone and quite possibly a punch in the arm. I know this because it happens every year, apparently I spend too much money when we’ve agreed on a £100 budget for each other. I never listen :D

That's true, but I updated from a 6s to a max because of that 10%. I'm a camera person and wanted the better camera updates on the max.

I updated my wifes' 7 to the xr after the 7 died. With smartphones a necessity rather than option for many, it makes sense to (me at least) have the better screens and the most capabilities.

The newer phones have more compatibility, though if your existing phone works for your current service not necessary to upgrade.
Vs the 7, the latest models:
B71 on T-Mobile
Enhanced HD Voice on Verizon (started with iPhone 8).
B14 on ATT.

And better carrier aggregation for improved download speeds.

And better cameras. An older phone may require a new battery by now, but still cheaper than a new phone.

I plan to stay with my iPhone 7+ and X for now. They still work well enough for me.

What do people expect newer phones to do? My 25 year old truck did 90% of what the new trucks do. Does this mean I should never get a new one? I went from the 5, 6, 7 and now XS Max. Yes my 5 did most of what my current phone does but this doesn't seem to be a reason not to upgrade.

It’s not a huge performance difference with iPhones though compared to cars. I think people question the need to upgrade more because costs have increased, I know I do. I used to buy the latest and greatest because it was just that but now you’d never see me spend £900 on a phone let alone £1100. When I consider what my 8+ can do, I really do struggle to see the attraction of the top tier devices. Times change I think for some of us.

It was only yesterday I heard these *exact* *same* request form friends. All of them are happy with their iPhone 7, 8, and X. It is fast for majority of uses, which really is just Social Media, Youtube/Netflix or Instant Messages. They all agree on that the overall system is smooth and fast and they see no need for upgrade. But the problem is Camera, it wasn't the picture are bad, it is when you can compare to Android Counterparts, it seems iPhone is a least a generation or two behind, especially the front Camera doing Selfies, is consider crap by some. And there is some discontent about Apple not being leading in Camera Quality any more, now they spend money on buying 2nd or even 3rd and fouth options. Along with Animoji they want to Sent... ( Yes, Shocking isn't it. I guess Man and Woman do think very differently )

I would have thought better 4G Speed, Faster SoC, Faster Internet Access, or even FaceTime would be some of the reason to upgrade. Nope. It is Camera and Animoji.

While we know there will be Tri Camera Setup, I could only hope we get some front facing camera improvement as well. I don't want to witness the mass migration of iPhone to Android.

Getting back on Topic, the XR2 will also likely get FaceID 2.0 as well.

Sad

I’m tempted to go from 7plus to an XR with a telephoto lens.....I still think a grand for a phone is just taking it a bit to too far.

The reality is, I don’t see consumers really paying $1000 for a phone, especially when trading in a device makes it considerably less. Now, there are some who do pay full MSRP for an iPhone, but the majority consumers don’t keep their old iPhones, they trade/sell them in for a credit to lower the cost/payment of the newest iPhone their financing in most situations. And that’s also what I expect Apple to expand on in the fall, is what this revamped trade-in policy that Tim Cook was referring to back in January that they will be offering.

Thing is these days if you have a smartphone then chances are you might have a smart watch (I have 2, Apple series 3 and Fossil Gen 3). At some point these will need replacing.....also I have original AirPods and they won’t last forever....so a decent iPhone under £800 is very appealing.

I’m of a similar mindset in that I have an Apple Watch that I want to replace this year and the cost of that combined with the phone makes me consider cheaper models. If I bought an XS Max and an Apple Watch then I wouldn’t get much change out of £1500. That’s just obscene which is why I think the XR tier devices are much more appealing going forward. You get all the best features for a considerable saving.

I’d never trade my old iPhone to Apple either as you can usually sell them privately and get more for them. There’s also the fact you can get better deals on new iPhones through third party dealers rather than Apples fixed retail prices and lack of competitive contracts.

I'm getting the next Max to replace my current Max. I'll pay the same amount if I keep the phone vs if I upgrade. I like the OLED display and as a photographer I appreciate having the best possible camera in my pocket that I can.

I have a fully paid MAX and I am considering it. I assume I would be able to get an unlocked XR2 at no additional cost by trading in my Max. With the XR2, you get

1) The latest processor
2) Presumably longer battery life
3) A dual camera, with the back camera upgraded to the latest specs
4) A smaller footprint

You only lose OLED, 3D Touch and slimmer bezels, but 3D Touch is being phased out anyway

Is it me or wouldn’t the 2019 XR be a better phone than the 2018 MAX?
There will be a huge camera with 3 lens.

Yeah it's certainly unfortunate, I was expecting it to be sunset on the 6s-Xs, still there but not getting updated any further but apparently they want to get us ready for it to be removed for good on the XI series. Much of the functionality looks to have been retained, but for one thing its going to feel slower tapping and holding, and it also looks like the pop part of peek and pop is gone :(

3D Touch ain’t dead after all.

Nice. I read Craig Federighi's response to that, and I just want to say, whenever it seems a user has questions or concerns with iOS, he usually is the one that responds relatively quickly, and I think that’s really respectable, considering sometimes these executives never respond at all.
It makes literally no sense that Apple would remove hardware support for 3dt in phones that have the hardware and replace it with haptic Touch in iOS 13.

Whether 2019 phones will have 3dt is another story.

That’s exactly what I was thinking but then was rightly informed that it wasn’t there in the beta build. Glad it’s actually just a bug and not a feature omission.

I keep thinking about this thread. And the video shows the leaked lens looking much bigger, and I assume 2019 iPhone will get the biggest camera upgrade since iPhone 7/X?

What that means is that 11R will be even better than XS in lots of ways.

Camera is definitely a big deal for me. I’m pretty happy with the Xs max at present & I wouldn’t upgrade this year if not for the camera on the next model.

I currently have a large Android phone with a so-so camera. If the XIR or whatever is will be called, will get the XS's photo quality, then it sounds rather interesting. I would really love usb-c, though. I have it on my iPad Pro, my current phone and it will be there on my next mac. One charger to rule them all. Lightning is way beyond its sell by date.

As for the XIS with its three cameras: I don't understand why they're not adding a tele. The so-called tele lens is a 52mm equiv, which in my book is a standard lens. The current wide angle is already 26mm equiv. If they go for a 3 lens setup for photographers, 24-50-85 makes much more sense than 18-28-50.
