The analogy I'm drawing here, which may only make sense to a geeky few, is this:
In the world of anime geekdom, there is this little cabal of grumpy geeks who think no anime is worth watching unless it contains deathly serious grim melodrama, ultraviolence and really great mecha animation. They are totally dismiss any of the lighter stuff, as well as the people who watch it. They think of themselves as the COOL nerds, and they're too good for anything that doesn't fit into their little narrow view.
A lot of Mac nerds follow a similar philosophy, like they want their computers to make them look like some sort of badass instead of the Mac nerds they are. To paraphrase a recent Penny Arcade strip, that boat already sailed. Go up to a non-nerd and start explaining to them why the kleenex box is cooler than the lamp and see what reaction you get.
I love my PBG4 to death. It's mercilessly cool, but I also loved the clamshell iBook I had before it, despite any suggestion that I was associated with something sort of (gulp) cute. They're both excellent designs, as is the new iMac. This morning I was just thinking, thank GOD I didn't buy that G4 tower I was thinking about, because now I can have the same thing for about a third of the price, and I can literally put it anywhere. I can see these in people's kitchens (doesn't look much different from a kitchen appliance, really), in their living rooms, not being offensively obtrusive to people's decor, and particularly, I can see them bolted onto pedestals with touch screens as really amazing kiosk devices. Functionally, it's a fantastic design, and it also looks great. It just doesn't look like a computer the way we've come to expect.
Basically, I think some of you need to base your opinions of things on the things themselves, rather than on whether you think other people will take YOU seriously if you own one. But that's just my opinion.
