I don't hear the fans on my early 2008. It sits a few feet away on the ground.

Ha.... i just got off the phone from DELL (had to order a laptop for the company)...

The lady on the other line was finishing my order and then i heard... "oh hold on a minute... my system just locked up."

not that it matters, but she probably meant the dell retail portal, which is an internet site. It's notoriously buggy and slow, which is a great frustration to dell employees who have to use it.

her system may have crashed, but more likely, her connection to the portal website stalled and kicked her off.

just curious, do those who say their mac pro's are really quite have 3rd party products installed?

I think its also important to remember btw that without any specific measurements, what exactly is meant by 'noisy' is different for everyone:)

Six internal drives and sitting on top of my desk about 18" away. I can only hear the fans if the room is quiet. Doesn't bother me at all. Much, much quieter than the G4, which was under the desk, the MP replaced.

Home made bracket to mount 2 HDD in optical bay under Superdrive.

Whisper quiet stocked form then I added a second drive and the fan has kicked up a little. Overal, I'm still very impressed. Not quieter than my MBP but the good thing is it is constant unlike the MBP which screams whenever you play a video fullscreen. This thing is consistant.
