I guess I don’t mind that they added a favicon in front of the URL but I’m not a fan of having every URL wrapped in a card with a slight shadow around it. Looks way too busy. The desktop version is much cleaner IMO. Why does Google think cards are the answer to everything?

For each search result item, desktop search has the item's Heading, followed by Source/URL, then Info:

Based on OP's post, mobile search has the Source/URL before the Heading, which seems weird to me. Without the cards, it would look as if the Source/URL belonged to the previous item because it's on the wrong side of the Heading. Example with card effect cut out:

"Digital Spy" looks like it belongs in the "Fandango" section because it's underneath the Fandango Heading and it is above it's actual section's Heading. With this order, it is disastrous to remove the card effect.

Note, I'm not trying to defend the cards... I'd just rather have everything belonging to an item be under that item's Heading in the first place. That's the whole purpose of a Heading, that's how desktop search does it, and it is the established norm for good reason. And when you do that, the cards can go.
