I understand it is difficult for the average person to escape the current paradigm and envision new categories of computing devices. I imagine it was difficult for the pocket watch generation to embrace those newfangled wristwatches when they first emerged. So naturally the responses in this thread tend to echo Henry Ford's famous quote,
"If I had asked customers what they wanted they would have said a faster horse."
I like the combination of screen sizes I mostly use now: watch for quick interactions, iPad mini for casual consumption and browsing, and desktop for more intensive tasks (especially that benefit from side by side windows). More clear segmentation of screen sizes feels more comfortable for me, but I realize having multiple products that overlap in use case is not possible for everyone.
This brings up a point that I didn't make clear in my OP - - I envision this enhanced Apple Watch as my sole portable device. That is why I would need a screen big enough to be able to read and write text and watch videos. I would like to be able to skip hauling around an iPhone altogether, and I'm not interested in wearing glasses.
Are you referring to reading glasses or the anticipated Apple Glass?
Which one does the context suggest?
I like my watch to look like a watch.
Even the current Apple Watch is more than a watch - - my proposed double wide version would be a full wrist computer.
Not for me. I can’t hold my wrist in the position necessary to watch a movie for any more than 30 seconds!
The band could be designed to work as a tabletop stand for extended viewing such as movies.
Also the size of the battery and limitations of physics.
In the volume of the current Apple Watch, the entire processor and sensor package fits inside with the battery. The double wide version would not need to duplicate that package, so the entire extra volume could be dedicated to battery.
Looks extremely ugly. Would never go outside with it.
No one has seen what Apple's design team would make, but based on their track record of beautiful design I doubt it would look
"extremely ugly". And many MacRumors members said they would
"never go outside with" AirPods... until they did.
Can’t see myself ever wanting to watch a movie on my watch. I don’t even want to watch movies on my phone, and that’s a significantly bigger screen. iPad is the minimum movie size for me.
If Apple was designing products just for
you, that would definitely be a problem. However, for many younger customers nowadays the iPhone is the preferred screen for viewing media.
