I had one of these back in the day. But it was not a watch that you wore all the time. You'd put it on for your outdoor workout and then turn it off and put it away afterwards.

Can’t see myself ever wanting to watch a movie on my watch. I don’t even want to watch movies on my phone, and that’s a significantly bigger screen. iPad is the minimum movie size for me.

Same! I only watch stuff on my phone when I’m in the car and it’s a rare occasion.

This post is sparking some obviously strong reactions and I’m glad OP posted it! Thanks!

I would not want one, but not for all of the aesthetic reasons... practically speaking it’s not comfortable to twist and hold your arm out to do things as you propose: movies, text docs, etc.

I like the combination of screen sizes I mostly use now: watch for quick interactions, iPad mini for casual consumption and browsing, and desktop for more intensive tasks (especially that benefit from side by side windows). More clear segmentation of screen sizes feels more comfortable for me, but I realize having multiple products that overlap in use case is not possible for everyone.

I already think the 44mm looks out of place on most people. Couldn't help noticing when watching some of the wwdc videos, that it really only looked natural and the right fit on 1 Person, in those few videos. Personally I would like them to reintroduce a 42mm model.

If you really want to go true gadget with BIG screen, I rather want the design where the screen become part of the band and wrap around your arm.

:p
Sounds like you would buy it as your ‘inside the house guilty pleasure.’ 🙃
Not even that 😂

The two first points in OPs post were:
- Big enough to watch a movie in widescreen with your AirPods
- Big enough to more easily read text documents

Why the heck would I watch a movie on a screen that is still smaller than the original 3.5" iPhone? I don't want to watch Mission Impossible and having Tom Cruise being 3 pixels. I even think my 11" iPad Pro is way too small for movies.

And what documents would I read on it? It would be twice as wide, but have the same height. So I would only see like 3 rows of text at a time. Why on earth would I prefer that over 1) audiobook from the watch, or 2) read it on my phone?

You would buy it so you could say you were one of a handful of people in the universe with one. Talk about MacRumors bragging rights. :D

I used to watch video on my iPad mini 5. It is even better on my iPad Pro 11 (2020) albeit that is not the norm.

I understand it is difficult for the average person to escape the current paradigm and envision new categories of computing devices. I imagine it was difficult for the pocket watch generation to embrace those newfangled wristwatches when they first emerged. So naturally the responses in this thread tend to echo Henry Ford's famous quote, "If I had asked customers what they wanted they would have said a faster horse."

This brings up a point that I didn't make clear in my OP - - I envision this enhanced Apple Watch as my sole portable device. That is why I would need a screen big enough to be able to read and write text and watch videos. I would like to be able to skip hauling around an iPhone altogether, and I'm not interested in wearing glasses.

Are you referring to reading glasses or the anticipated Apple Glass?
Which one does the context suggest?

I like my watch to look like a watch.
Even the current Apple Watch is more than a watch - - my proposed double wide version would be a full wrist computer.

Not for me. I can’t hold my wrist in the position necessary to watch a movie for any more than 30 seconds!
The band could be designed to work as a tabletop stand for extended viewing such as movies.

Also the size of the battery and limitations of physics.
In the volume of the current Apple Watch, the entire processor and sensor package fits inside with the battery. The double wide version would not need to duplicate that package, so the entire extra volume could be dedicated to battery.

Looks extremely ugly. Would never go outside with it.
No one has seen what Apple's design team would make, but based on their track record of beautiful design I doubt it would look "extremely ugly". And many MacRumors members said they would "never go outside with" AirPods... until they did.

If Apple was designing products just for you, that would definitely be a problem. However, for many younger customers nowadays the iPhone is the preferred screen for viewing media.

No. But if they made an Apple PocketWatch, I'd totally buy that. ;)
Here ya go...
