Anybody else with video issues in BootCamp with new iMac?

Yesterday I was FINALLY able to get Bootcamp 1.4 installed with a new slipstreamed version of XP w/SP2 and installed all the drivers from the driver disc that Bootcamp had me create in OSX. Everything seemed just fine until I noticed some strange little dots popping up on the screen about 2" to the right of my mouse cursor and they appeared to move in sync with my mouse cursor. These dots would seem to blink on and off rapidly.

I'm sure this is a video driver issue because when I uninstalled the ATI driver through the add/remove programs menu and rebooted XP to the generic video drivers the dots were gone. I figured maybe I'd go ahead and re-install the drivers using the Mac drivers disc again, but after I did and rebooted Windows I was back to where I was before.

I don't think there are any problems with the card itself because there are zero problems in OSX. Also, even when I did have the problems in XP there were times when I could reboot XP and I might get lucky and the dots wouldn't be there. I just installed Age of Empires 3 in Windows and it worked great when the dots weren't there. I tried it when the dots were there and they still showed up when the game was running (cutscenes, menus, etc) but then the video would appear to freeze up even though I could move the mouse cursor. To make things even more strange the screen would go blank, but I could still click on menu items since the app was running and manage to quit the application by "braille".

Any thoughts? Anybody else run into this? I was thinking of trying a new video driver, but the only ones I seem to be able to find are ones available for an older version of Bootcamp or from Amd that were from May '07 whereas the current drivers are apparently current as of July.

I have the EXACT same problem! Thanks for explaining it so I can link to this one. I have the 20" iMac and Windows XP with the latest bootcamp. I see dots when I put on a game every now and then, and the whole system just freezes (except the mouse and sound) after a few minutes of play. I'm changing the iMac anyway due to fan problems so I'll report how it's like with another iMac.

My guess is it's a problem related to the Windows drivers since Apple said the graphics card is some Mac-custom-thingy. Hopefully it'll be fixed at least when Leopard releases..

There are tweaked drivers out there from omegadrivers.net

I use them all the time on my XP SP2 PC and they work fine - apparently giving better performance than stock ATi drivers. They are based on the latest Catalyst drivers, so in theory they should work for the iMac using bootcamp (all ATi graphics cards are supported).

Perhaps someone could try them and do some benchies vs Apple supplied vs ATi latest Catalyst?

If somebody could try this I'd be curious what the results are. I'm stuck at work for several hours still so I can't do anything.

As a side note, I found a Bootcamp forum on the Apple website and there are some more people in there having the same problem. So at least this is something a lot of people seem to be having problems with. I mean, it's good and not good at the same time

Yep, I'm getting this too - the first time it happened the game I was playing FIA GTR just started stuttering and eventually crashed with a black screen. I must admit I was quite worried as it looked like the hardware had overheated or something... After a reboot it worked fine.

It's doing it again tonight and no amount of rebooting seems to fix it this time.

I'll post if I find a solution - I might try some ATi drivers.
Cheers,
Craig.

Mine works flawlessly.

Has anyone got the new drivers to work though? I just get a message saying I don't have supported hardware when I try to install.

well i got the same static lines, but it is after all a driver issue.
i installed the omega drivers
http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php
and that works some how better, no static lines anymore..
the only thing is that some shadows in HL2 are very weird, (looks foggy) and Unreal 2 doesn't work even with the official driver.

so hopefully we get new drivers in October when leopard comes out
with the new Bootcamp.
