I resurrected an old 27" 2009 iMac, hard drive failed and I was glad to spend some money and have a small (500GB) SSD installed, the machine is quite ok with a quad i7 and 8GB, space is never enough but will find a way to overcome it.

It came back off of the Apple repair with Sierra installed, I mostly use it to store and edit photographs (not a pro but I like photography) and browse the web, basically the application I am most into is Adobe LightRoom which plays nice enough with the actual configuration and was questioning myself if the upgrade to HighSierra would get any benefits on such an old machine and for my needs (photo storage and edit).

Thanks for your input and experiences

One of the main benefits to running the latest OS is that it will get security updates longer. As far as feature benefits, the list of added features can be found here:

https://www.apple.com/macos/high-sierra/

As with any new OS, there maybe more bugs then your dealing with now. As far as speed, you should expect the same performance you have now.

High Sierra runs fine on 2010 iMac, which is basically the same machine.

However, I've since semi-retired it, and am just using it as an external monitor for 2017 iMac.

If it's your primary machine for photos though, then you might want to consider adding extra RAM. 8 GB is OK, but 12-16 GB may be better, depending on your usage habits. I have 12 GB is mine.

Running High Sierra on iMac (27-inch, Late 2009),
2.66 GHz Intel Core i5,
16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Runs really good imho. Would love to upgrade to a newer mac but apple prices in the UK went silly a few months back...one day
