I was planning to do this too.. The cable is coming and I have a few ideas on how to mount the drive.

I've been contemplating on making a ssd raid 0 setup, but I havn't had any experience doing that on the mac.

If I remember correctly, the raid stuff is in disk utility - so the question becomes, is it a software raid? Can I create it during mac os x setup?

It is most certainly a software raid. And you can make it during OS X setup, you simply open Disk Utility form the top menu while at the first couple screens of the installer.

I'm personally not going the raid route partially because it is a software raid, and it is a laptop. But YMMV
 
Edit: don't you have more room if you where to put you HD like this?

I originally thought about installing the drive vertically, but when i got the cables, it fit better horizontally. I bought the cables from satacables.com.
 
The aluminum flashing is a great idea. About fastening the drive to it, did you consider making more holes for screws? I'm not sure if your drive has holes underneath or not. If it doesn't, I might try cutting tabs in the plate and bending them up to cradle the drive. You could drill holes in them and even screw them to the drive.

When i was thinking about how to make a cradle/tray to hold the hard drive, i originally thought about cutting a hole in the aluminum flashing and bending two tabs upward, and screw them to the side of the hard drive. but for me that bend would have been too difficult to get right, and plus i dont have any screws lying around that would fit.

What i have decided to do is take some double sided foam tape, and simply tape it to the flashing. if it comes off im back to the drawing boards, lol. I think the tape will also help control vibration although there is very little vibration as it is.

Then you put one plank on it to align it also, so you only have one piece of aluminium sticking out. Then you press on the upper plank, meanwhile, with you other hand you take the other plank and bend it over the edge of the table. Once it is bend you can adjust the right angle. Offcourse this goes a lot easier if you have a pair a clamps. I build mine bracket on this way, and the hard disk doesn't even need screws!

Anyway, here are some pictures of the bracket I build, toghether with one oft he hard disks I had laying around here. some other good news... My cables (and those of philletourneau)will be arriving today. Some online shops are pretty slow. If I have the time to build it in i'll put some more pictures online.

As you can see, it needs a little cleaning an sanding, but it's getting there.
 
help finding the necessary cables

could someone please point me in the right direction to where to get the right cables in the UK or a site that delivers to the uk

That is very nice work, but if u plan to put the hard drive in the tray without any vibration dampening material, u will want to put vibration dampening material between the tray and the laptop. Cant wait to see the finished product. Im still waiting for my second drive for the raid, but as soon as i get it in, i'll have some pics and performance benchmarks

The delivery of my macbook pro took a while, but that's delivered and working from it right now. I build the bracket, and finished it off a bit more. Right now I am working on the cable.
It will be from one piece, without any cutting or soldering. The sata power connector needs a little cut on the side for it, which isn't a big deal. You will see the ens result after I'm finished. Soon folks.... Soon :p
 
could some nice person direct me to where it can get the right cables in the USA?

That is, the exact cables (part numbers) I will need as I haven't a clue.

I'm sure a lot of us would be grateful :)

( it's hard to see form the pics which ones are which, are and descriptions like "male sata' are easy to mix up)

Well, this is what I said then. I am working on it right now. It got it working, sort of. There seems to be a problem with the booting. Occasionally it boots, but most of the time it doesn't. It has to be a problem with the power connector, because I can't think of anything else.
I'll look into it. After everything is really finished and it works I'll post some pictures.

Edit: I found the problem. The little flatcable Wasn't attached properly.... :p It needs a bit of cleaning op in there before I post my pictures. At least now mac osx says: Mactintosh HD and Mactintosh HD 2!

Congratulations! I would love to see some pictures of your final product and how you did it. You've been wonderfully informative so far. Also, if your computer is showing Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD 2, does that mean you did not do the RAID 0 set up w/ the x25's?
 
Hi everyone,

Well the main reason i decided to buy the new macbook pro over the older one was largely the fact that the new one had a sata optical drive, and therefore more easily able to accept a two hard drive setup. So once i got it home i immediately took i apart to access the challenges of installing a second hard drive. My ultimate goal is to have a 1TB raid with two 500gb 2.5in drives. So this is meant to be a little build post of my experience.

After i opened the notebook, i determined what connectors are going to be needed. The sata connector that is connected to the motherboard, i mean logicboard, is a micro sata female that holds both power and data. The sata connection on the 2.5 sata hard drives are a standard sata male. So i needed to find a micro sata male to normal sata male for data and power. I went with cables from satacables.com.

part number - MSSA-004 which is the micro sata male to standard sata data female and the Molex four pin

part number - SS-08MPS which is the standard sata power female to molex four pin

When i got the cables, i wanted to solder the four wires of the two molex connectors together to make a more manipulatable cable, and to make it a single cable.

I wanted to retain the ability to completely reverse any modification i make to the notebook, so i wanted to created a little tray for the hard drive to sit in. I wanted the tray to use the same screws as the optical drive does and be easily removable. i went to Lowes and picked up some 5" x 7" Aluminum Step Flashing, which is a thin piece of aluminum that is bendable by hand and cuttable with a decent pair of scissors, very suitable for making a hard drive tray. I formed the aluminum in the shape that i wanted and mounted it.

Now i am not completely finished with this project as u can see in the pictures, i havent completely thought out how i am going to connect the hard drive to the tray. i will probably just use some double sided tape or something, i am open to suggestions, lol.

I havnt gotten the second hard drive just yet, but when i do i plan on doing some benchmarks to record the difference it made.

Oh and by the way, it only takes about 2-3 minutes to do the full swap, so if i ever need to take it in to Apple, its not all that big of an inconvenience. And another thing, i wanted to minimize the vibration of the hard drive, so i used some soft rubber and taped it in between the tray and the posts to minimize it, and i dont know if it made a difference or not, but i cant feel the second hard drive any more than the apple one. And another thing, it fits, but just barely, all the panels are still perfectly aligned. Oh and one more critical thing to think about, the hard drive fits, but when u add the standard sata cables, it becomes a very close fit. I had to carefully bend the sata cable as far as it would go in order for it to fit.

thanks for the install information.... im having a problem though. being from canada i cant order from satacables.com so i have resorted to looking on ebay for the cables..... however what i found is that the cables on ebay are missing 2 of the wires on the MOLEX connector all that they come with is the red and black..... can i still do the mod with this? or do i need all 4 Cables?

I'm no expert on the power requirements for the 2.5in sata hard drives, but i think the drives only require the 5 volt (red cable) and ground (black) to run. So if the cable u are thinking about getting has the red and black, i would assume it would work. Also i think i said it was a micro sata, but satacables.com labeled it wrong, it is actually a slimline sata, and there is a difference.

I did a quick search on ebay and didnt find any cables that would work. I would suggest posting the item, and someone can take a look to verify that it will work or not.
 
I'm sure many people still use the optical drive... that's why DVDs/Software are still sold on discs. When you have media on iTunes and want to backup the library so that you can reinstall the OS, don't come whining back here. It only burns on optical media, so good luck.

But if you want to risk it, go ahead. I don't see a reason for RAID on notebooks or more storage, get an external and stick all your data there.

It's called "copy the Music folder onto an external HDD".

This aint brain surgery.

The problem is, that cable is a female on the slimline side, u need a male on the slimline side. after a quick look i didnt find any on the internet besides satacables.com, but it is possible to build the cable. for instance u can buy a slimline sata extension, a sata power to molex, and a sata data cable. Then u would need to strip and join the cables to make ur custom cable, similar to what i did, but u would also need to do that to the sata data cable as well.
