Can someone post a picture of what the phone should look like after the needle mod? Im confused if the holes are poke in the actual plastic or the speaker screen.

I would like to see it before I attempt this on my precious iphone..LoL i kid about the precious remark :p

It's funny because I was cleaning out the speaker when I felt a small pop like I went through something but didn't think much of it. It happened a few times and then I played music and it was MUCH louder so I finished the rest! :D

Question: In looking at the speaker covering on the outside of my phone, the metal screen, the holes seem SOOOOOOOOOOOOO small.

Is there a needle that small out there?

I mean, these holes are REALLY small.

Or are people also bending this screen when they do this?

My guess would be that this is a first gen mod only. The addition of the mesh screen is going to prevent anything from getting into the speaker port unless you disassemble the phone. There's really no reason anyway as the 3G volume is drastically louder than the original.

For those with the original, if you want a ringtone you'll never miss without poking holes in your speaker cover, search for the iPhone commercial ringtone. It's all over this site and while I'm using it, my ringtone volume is set to about 40%. Every other tone I use is at 100% and I still miss it sometimes. Plus it sounds professional.

I have ridiculously thin needles at my disposal ( my brother uses them to clean out his artist pens)

I found a needle that made it through the holes, poked around, and found no increase in volume

so to recap

2g iphone = works great

3g iphone = NO INCREASE IN SOUND VOLUME

Hey I have used this method and it works quite well. The material they put there is just way to thick, maybe to stop water from coming in??

At least on the 3G I can hear it just fine at full volume.

If you are having difficulty, I'd suggest that you see an audiologist or ENT before starting to modify your iPhone. You may be suffering from some sort of hearing loss, either temporary or permanent.

I went ahead and did the trick.

This mod is for the original iPhone only. The 3G has a completely different speaker grill to solve this problem.

It has nothing to do with hearing loss. I have excellent hearing (significantly better than most according to the audiologist) and even I have a hard time hearing the ringtones/other audio sometimes. It's not a problem in a quiet area of course. But it's a major problem if you're in the car with road noise or in an area that has a lot of background noise. I've actually missed calls because of this. I'm totally doing the mod.

you hoooddddd!! pop that speaker -__-
The speaker is ported and thus set a good ways back from the actual grill. As long as you don't go too far you've got no worries.

[Edit]
Alright, I just used one of my wife's needles to poke a hole in the felt in the grill while it was playing MacBreak Weekly (TWiT.tv) in my basement next to the furnace running and let me tell you it really does get a HECK of a lot louder. Each poke in the grill resulted in a estimated 3dB jump. Seriously, you know when you've found an actual hole and not a dummy because you really can hear the difference. I'll never have a hard time hearing my ringer again! Thank you for posting this OP!

I know this technique is for the original iPhone, but I find my iPhone 3G isn't particularly loud for ringing, and the ring volume is up full.

Is there any mods to make the iPhone 3G louder (apart from Jailbreaking)?
