The performance is not as big of a deal if the Steam deal lets you play on either Mac or PC. Were you able to try on PC? If it works I can use the MBP only for "emergency" Civ sessions.
Yes buying on Steam let's you play on PC or Mac. My PC is nothing special but it's really just the dedicated graphics card that makes the difference. Still can't run on high or ultra but I'm fairly confident I'll stat around 30 fps, even late game.

The MBP will work for emergency sessions (lol). Again my only concern is overheating.

Anyone tried this on a maxed 15" with 460. I am very tempted to buy it, but waiting until it goes on sale. Probably use Steam.

One other difference with the Steam version is it supports playing against other people, while the MAC OS version does not.

Sweet! Now I just need to wait for a Steam sale to rationalize the purchase. I know, it's ridiculous given the price of the MBP, but this is pure frivolousness. My PC is nothing special either. I hope it's good enough. Have not had my MBP feel any warmer that "cold" so far. I'm not worried about overheating because I won't be playing on a regular basis.

I have Civ VI on a 2016 15in with the 455. It runs alright at medium settings, but a little choppy at high settings. In either case, it went thru the battery in 2 hours (ouch). If it had gotten 2 degrees warmer, I wouldn't have been able to touch it.

As a side note, it runs great on my 5K iMac.

Similar experience here, I have the same specs.

I found that it runs decent on medium with the AA turned down.. was getting some weird glitches in the water reflections. Probably the crappy AMD GPU.. it's not really optimized for the higher AA settings.

LOL. I totally agree. No issues spending almost 4 grand on the MBP, but waiting and waiting to save 10-15 bucks on a game.

Bringing back from the dead. I bought Civ6 during a ~$12 off Steam sale a month or so ago. Works fine on my 13"TB, but the fan will run the entire time of play, also running external display. Taking advantage of the Steam multi-platform, I also play on my PC. Granted, it's not a powerhouse and a few years old, but it's performance is indistinguishable from the MBP, even with it's dGPU. The fan runs continuously on the PC too. Both render slower in later stages of the game, but it doesn't affect gameplay at all. The gameplay experience is no different than any past Civ's so it's FINE. I highly recommend the Steam option if you switch between PC and Macs. Don't wait on the fence. Buy it, if it goes on sale for a whole $12 off!

Yeah it runs fine for me, for the most part. After playing Civ VI for about 20-30 hours though, I see why Civ V is much better. They simplified a lot of stuff on Civ VI, although I like the policy card system

This doesn't necessarily help you out or answer your question, however, if you can live with civ 4 or 5, I'd expect they'd run great. I play both on my 2015 MacBook air, civ 4 doesn't even get the fans going, civ 5 does, but looks pretty good and works well enough to play and enjoy it overall. I guess it helps that I just bought them in the humble bundle that just expired a couple days ago, paid $9 for both, with all expansions.
