Handbrake.

Hurrah! This thread has gone full circle and it only took 2 and a half years.

I'm doing a dual layer dvd and its been going for two days now. Got to be something that works better than mac the ripper

Updated 12-7-09

Seems like Mac the Ripper is a bust! I've been trying to do a dual layer DVD (Niptuck Season 2 disc)for 3days now and its not done.

What I wanted was a program like Anydvd to remove the protection on the fly. And a program like FairUse Wizard that will allow you to convert the DVD down to avi, xvid, mp4 etc,.... to be watched on my Zune.

Any ideas?

This will give you On the Fly -Decoding, and gets rid of any DRM issues: http://www.metakine.com/products/fairmount/

This will give you all your encoding options. Use v0.9.3 for creating AVIs, as Handbrake is going to be 64Bit only for the future and therefore starting with v0.9.4 AVI (aka DIVX/XVID) support was removed: http://handbrake.fr/

HandBrake is what you want!

I have used HandBrake for years, which rips to AVI, MP4, and several others. It is a free program. Granted, the upgrade did eliminate AVI files, but luckily, I kept the older version and did not update.

Background removal of region code

The beautiful thing is with Anydvd is the automatic background removal of the region code so you do not get prompted to change the Region code for your drive. Is there a Mac app that addresses this?

I am trying to use Handbrake 64bit to rip a Region 2 tv series, but it just gets stuck on the scanning process and logs errors:

Windows GUI Usage Guide

First things first. Handbrake does NOT decrypt Commercial DVD or Bluray discs.

Third-party software is required for this part of the process. (e.g. AnyDVD, DVD43 or DVD Decryptor)

There is also plenty of other software that is available for this task, but will not be discussed in this article. Feel free to google and research the various software available.

Warning: Please note that decrypting copy protected sources is not legal in all countries. You should consult the law in your own country before using these applications.

Anyone tried something called "WinX DVD Ripper for Mac"

Do you use Handbrake on Mac OS X? If so, also install VLC Player to get access to the decryption library Handbrake uses.
You could also use a ripping software first, just follow the links below or the last one in my signature.

Hi. First Post on MacRumors for me :)

Thought I would share my personal favorite (and working) solution is VMWare Fusion + Windows XP + AnyDVD + MakeMKV

I found you have to set the region in XP after installing (Device Manager > CD/DVD Drives > Properties) in order make AnyDVD happy.

It's not fast (~1x), but its incredibly simple compared to most other methods I've tried, and the end result is a single, almost universally supported MKV file that can easily be transcoded/compressed to your liking. Also retains chapter information. Super easy to exclude stuff you don't want including alternate language audio tracks and subtitles.

I hear it works on Blu-Ray, too, but I'm not into Blu-Ray yet.
