Nah, not so awesome for me. I need massive 12TB storage and SSD speeds, so RAID array it is :)

It would be awesome as it will bring the price down of the 500GB - 1TB drives.

500GB ssd Samsung Evo is about $199 standard now which is great, a couple of years ago you would pay twice that. Would love to see 500GB around $150 mark and 1TB SSD around $300 mark (within this year).

...Is there any information anywhere that shows the steps needed to configure the drives in RAID?...Let's say the PROMISE Pegasus2 R4 8TB (4 by 2TB) Thunderbolt 2 RAID System as an example....

Promise is hardware-based RAID and you use their utilities to configure it. OWN ThunderBay 4 is software RAID, and you use the 3rd party SoftRAID to configure that: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/External-Drive/OWC/ThunderBay-4-RAID5

CalDigit has some: http://www.caldigit.com/T4/

In general I prefer RAID5 on smaller arrays like the R4. On a bigger array with more drives you have other options like RAID10.

A less expensive solution is use two-drive RAID0 and just do frequent backups. In theory you could do that on 3 or 4 drives. However my personal safety factor is only do this on two drives. Also there's a diminishing law of returns as I/O speeds climb. They may produce a faster benchmark but this rarely translates into a real world difference. A well-implemented 4-drive RAID5 is already very fast and going to 4-drive RAID0 may not provide much real-world performance benefit, but its hurts reliability.

RAID 0 and 5 has its pro's and con's. It appears that RAID 5 may be a little slower, but it's a safe way to go if you don't do frequent backups. IMO this is why people are leaning towards it..... which is a valid reason. James :)

Lots of options...... Thanks for all the great suggestions! Please keep chiming in. Ray

Well..... I'm trying to decide between the Pegasus R6 12TB (6x2TB) and the Pegasus R8 24TB (8x3TB) in RAID 5 for the maxed out iMac's 5K media drive. In addition, I will be definitely backing up to a couple other external hard drives for storage. I know I'll be mixing in effects, chroma keying, text, pic's, music, etc. with the majority of my media. Decisions..... decisions..... LOL. Thanks, Ray

Since write operations are largely slower on RAID 5 arrays, I'd recommend a RAID 10 setup instead.

Thank you for pointing out the benefits of RAID 10. I knew about it but did not seriously consider it until your posts suggested that I needed to explore it as an option.

I second that...... It's definitely worth the try for the benefits. Thanks again, Ray :)

While traditionally write operations are slower on RAID5, some RAID5 units have very good write performance, e.g, Promise Pegasus series (which I know you have).

In case anyone doesn't know, there's a significant capacity penalty for RAID10 vs RAID5. E.g, 4x2TB drives on RAID5 gives 6TB usable capacity, whereas on RAID10 it only gives 4TB capacity. See RAID calculator: http://wintelguy.com/raidcalc.pl

Here's a Blackmagic benchmark on a 4 x 4TB Pegasus2 R4 in RAID10, which gives 8TB usable capacity. In general his numbers are slower on both read and write than my 4 x 2TB Pegasus1 R4 in RAID5. This could be due to various factors but it shows you never know without testing the exact configuration.

Great info.! Big hit..... I may try RAID 10 if I purchase the Pegasus R8 24TB (8x3TB) simply due to having more drives for the big hit. In all likelihood, I'll go with the RAID 5 configuration simply due to not losing a lot of capacity. Thanks...... Ray;)
