if so, curious of thoughts? was interesting yesterday at the apple store the reppresentive said the sold out of the $3800 high end model already! That's a lot of $$!

I bought the base in Silver... Mainly a home user with internet, mail, office type docs with some minor video and photo editing..

I am going today to pickup the base myself. Was tempted at the higher end model due to storage but I think 512GB should be sufficient and I do not think I will notice the loss of two extra cores during my day to day.

yeah likely not unless you are doing intense programming, editing etc.!! its a nice machine!

I am very happy with the base.. It's overkill for my use but I was mainly after the larger screen....

It's an upgrade in every way possible over the 15"... The KB is back to being great and I don't have any worries about fault rates that plagued the butterfly KB's... I'd say key travel is in-between the old 2015 and the butterfly.

I watched this video yesterday and the improvements are massive.. The GPU in the base is almost on par with the top dog 15" GPU.. Impressive...

If I were to buy the MBP, it would be the base model with upgraded storage. That's more then enough computer for my needs

Yeah I scooped up the base too. I had a 2019 15" mid tier (2.3/16/512/560X) that I sold about 45 days ago. Was basically able to swap for just about free. I never maxed out my CPU with the 2.3 i9, and the GPU upgrade is already noticeable. And this keyboard is miles better. I actually like that the laptop is slightly thicker too. It felt almost fragile before.

Very happy overall. I tried the iPad Pro/Hackintosh Desktop only lifestyle and just couldn't get used to it so back to a MBP I went.

I bought the base. It's on the truck for delivery.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sold out of the higher end models. I would assume stores didn't get very many.

The base model is extremely well balanced this time. It doesn’t have a single component that’s underwhelming. Great CPU with amazing single core performance, a very capable graphics card (for a laptop), a big SSD and 16GB of RAM which is sufficient for 99% of users.

Base model for me. I’m a fairly “pro” user as I use my laptop for mobile game design, 3D modeling, animation, web design and some music production. The base 16” is more than enough for my needs. Powerful 6 core CPU, 512gb SSD and the GPU is actually more powerful than last generations Vega 16 (for some task the 5300m is actually slightly more powerful than the Vega 20).

For once the base model is actually pretty darn good! And when I need a graphics boost, I have my eGPU.

Great job Apple! That Pro team is working great! They actually sacrificed thinness and weight to make a laptop that works better for pros.

Agreed... In the end I went with the base $2800 model with the education discount applied which was $2,599... bought it home last night

I bought a refurb 15 i9/16/512 Vega20 for $2679 on the 12th and then the 16 happen the next day. So then I ordered the $2800 model with the 8GB gfx card and with educational pricing it came to $2689! and then yesterday Apple only had the base and the 1TB model in the store.... I canceled the online order with the 8GB gfx because I don't need the horsepower at all.... not even the 5500m but oh well. I still ended up getting a $80 refund

I didn't even needed the Vega 20 when I got the 15 but my rationale was that I wasn't spending more than $2500 with that ancient 560x

I am the same, tried the Mac Mini, iPad Pro lifestyle but nothing beats taking lots of power out and about.

I'm having a hard time distinguishing the base from the non-"base." Is it just the smallest SSD configuration, the one i7 processor, and the one 5300M graphics card? seems a smaller than normal differentiation, but I guess that's good. Maybe their web page template just needed two side-by-side options :D Or is there some other difference I'm missing?

And BTW, is the 16" a 24bit display? I thought the 15" were 30 bit now, although I also seem to recall their was debate about whether that was dithering, etc.

I bought the base 16” as a computer science student and I’m loving it so far. It’s definitely a nice upgrade from a 13” and I can tell I’ll get a lot of use out of this computer for the next 4-5 years.

I am far from rich. Handsome, but not rich. I feel if I'm already spending $2400 for something I really don't need other than being handsome with, then an extra $400 for twice the handsomeness in the Memory departments and storage then, why not? I'm worth it.

Leaning towards a base with 32 GB RAM as the only upgrade.

Coming from a base mid-2015 with 2.2/16/256:

-Go from 4 cores to 6 (higher clock speed too)
-Double the RAM (faster too)
-Double the storage (faster speeds too I'd assume)
-A discreet GPU on par with Vega 16/20 compared to NO dGPU currently

And all the other tangibles, 500 nit screen vs 300 nits, better speakers, battery, etc and it's easily more than 2x the machine.

With EDU discount, this machine is only $40 cheaper than the higher end stock configuration, which would have less RAM but 8 cores, even better dGPU, and even more storage. So most would probably pick that as it's even better in 3 of 4 categories for basically the same price.

But, for me, I just plain *want* 32 GB RAM since I plan to keep it a long time and I'm not spending like $3200-$3300 after tax with EDU discount for that on top of the higher configuration. Plus then I think about how much cooler and quieter the base processor/dGPU will run and the better battery life and suddenly this base configuration with the RAM upgrade is *extremely* attractive.

Tempting to throw another measley $90 at it for a 5500M but nah the 5300 is plenty.

I like your reasoning, I'm in the same boat with a late 2013 model and feel a similar config would be 2x the machine currently and saving some $$$ as well. Just wondering about that darn WiFi 6...🤔

Definitely and you can actually game on a MBP!

I think the base 16" will be a very popular model. It's a very good value with little "Apple tax."

Love mine. Only issue is the speaker cracking and that seems to be pretty common with all the 16" models.
