Every photo I have seen of an Apple Watch with a case makes it look ridiculous and toyish. A case on the new Ultra will make it look like a thicker toy. My opinion of course.

I have never seen a case on high end watches like Rolex or Omega. Perhaps the Apple Watches are not built as well and require a case?

As the Apple Watch lifespan is so short compared to a normal watch, why would you make a special effort to protect it?

Still bound to build up mini scratches over the years... I rocked the S4 and after 4 years there's like 30 mini scratches on it lol
I also rock an S4 over the years (with still 89% battery health today. That’s 3+ years) and doesnt notice any visible scratches except maybe 2 on the display, which doesnt event affect normal use. As for the micro scratches? I didnt even Care about those.

Take it from someone that has owned every Apple stainless steel watch released...

I worked in a warehouse wearing the watches (but since retired)

Unless are in an environment where the watch is going to bang around, these babies take a licking and keep on ticking (to borrow a coined phrase from Timex).

The glass is highly durable.

I suppose the case could get scratched, but my stainless steel never did and I banged it against steel containers.

Go for the protective case if you want but I think it ruins the look of the watch.

not only no, hell no ...
and yes, sapphire can get scratches, seen it on my S4 SBSS, but I have never used a screen protector on either a watch nor iPhone and it's going to stay that way for me

Not case but glass screen protector yes. There are instances where sapphire can get scratched and glass screen protector is invisible.

Cases will stop bang and scope damage but will almost definitely create pit marks where dust/grit gets in.
Years ago I had a Sport watch I used just for work but used a case on it to protect the aluminium.

Even with removing and cleaning everyday small pit marks appeared over time. If grit gets in and you bump the case it gets stamped onto the watch.

I have zero problems with people adding protection to an 800 dollar watch, in fact I understand. Adding a screen protector would ruin the look for me as it would stick up from the edge begging for a tap against something to only break and have to keep adding one.

also, sapphire glass that’s recessed, that’s absolutely enough. I have seen where cases cause more scratches than not with dust getting in there and rubbing the watch. Just get apple care and don‘t worry be happy!

I don’t know if anyone here knows the answer to the question, but would a case accelerate the degradation of the waterproof gasket? My old watch is a series 4 and apparently the gasket failed and sweat got inside which really messed up the screen. I’ve always wondered if having a case accelerated the degradation since sweat was getting stuck between the protective case and the watch. So with my AWU, I’m thinking I should go case less instead. Hopefully they made the ultra with a better gasket but based on what people have said, there are no watches with gaskets that lasts forever. Even the really expensive mechanical watches need the gaskets to be replaced every few years when they are serviced.

No case but yes on screen protector. I’ve had the series 2 black stainless and it held up great but there is a scratch on the screen, only one but it still bothered me. I upgraded this year to the Ultra and bought a glass protector. It does not stick up past the bezel and you would never know it was there. I’ll see how it holds up.

Are you sure it was a scratch, and not a coating issue? Sapphire is very hard to scratch, after owning 5 SS AWs, I have yet to actually scratch one, but have had the coating get damaged.
