Ok, activity Monitor and Top agree on this:
Wired = 195M
Active = 841M
Inactive = 308M
Free = 442M
According to Apple, adding those first 3 should give me used. In Activity Monitor, it does. But adding Activity Monitor's Used total to the Free amount doesn't add up to 2048MB. Now, Top lists a different number for used. This number + Free DOES equal 2048....except this number is greater than Wired+Active+Inactive. So where is this number coming from? Where is this missing ~300MB and what the heck is it doing? Why is it unaccounted for in Top's breakdown, and why doesn't it appear anywhere in Activity Monitor?
