Due to the prices of this year models, is anyone considering the option to buy last years models? For example, there are now offers of new iPhone 8 Plus (64Gb) Red Edition for 700€. This is nearly the half price of Xs Max, and yet is a very capable device!

Its not that I cannot afford one expensive model from this year, is that to me is nearly injustificable to pay so much (now I'm using an iPhone 6 for the unique reason that it just works)

Anyone? Bad idea?

I did that (and through Verizon got two of the 8 Plus Red via BOGO). Though the price is obviously nice I actually did it for the eye strain issue associated with OLED screens. I have had Iphones for several years and earlier this year switched to a Google Pixel 2 to try something new and had major eye strain issues. Sold the Pixel 2 yesterday and now using the 8 Plus and loving it.

Curious why you want to know if it’s a bad idea? Especially when you seem it’s unjustified to pay so much for the new phones.

It was between the 8 Plus and the XR for me. I am planning on going with the XR for the battery life and improved camera sensor. The XS is just not worth the extra cost for my needs.

My kids want the iPhone 8 plus, so it looks like I may be on the hook to getting those. I'd rather get the less expensive iPhone 7 or the non-plus 8

I do. I am torn between 8 Plus, X and Xr.

8 Plus
+ standard 16:9 display
+ the certainty of the classic model (no hardware issues of the 1st gen products)
+ faster log-in with Touch ID
+ battery
- BIG
- second lens without OIS

X
+ smallest of the three (but still cannot use it one handed)
+ OIS on both lenses
+ deep black and with dark mode coming in the future very good battery life
+ new form factor (iOS will be evolving in favor of a new bezel-less construction)
- awful aspect ratio
- slower Face ID than Xr
- OLED is too bright

Xr
+ best Camera of the three (even with one lens there is portrait mode)
+ a good compromise in size between Plus and X
+ new form factor (iOS will be evolving in favor of a new bezel-less construction)
+ LCD instead of OLED
+ battery
- new display therefore there could be 1st gen issues
- still bigger than X

I just did. A 256GB Product Red. And yes, the EarPods adapter came with it.

Im also sensitive to lights flickering and dont know if an OLED display could cause me eyestrain too...

I think I will wait to see in person the new Xr and then decide

I bought an 8 Plus 64gb over the Xr two days ago - upgrading from a 6s. 3D touch was a the deciding factor for me and the price drop makes the deal even sweeter.

Nice technical evaluation :)

For me a good camera in the phone is a wellcome addition but not cruzial, because when Im travelling Im always wearing my reflex camera (no phone can match the quality of a big lens, for the moment).

For this reason Im leaning towards the 8 Plus.. if I see a good offer maybe Im in.

I did. "Refurbished" grade A which ended up being a brand new phone (no marks whatsoever, no dust anywhere, and battery health says 100%). £550 instead of the £850 that sells for at the Apple Store (256GB).

I believe phone operators are getting rid of their extra stock and these are being sold as used or refurbished while they are in fact new. (Or perhaps they are items with a broken box, etc.)

My daughter bought the 8+ last week after the Xs intro. The camera and screen on the Xr didn't appeal to her nor did the Max's price.

I went over to the Note 8 for a month knowing that new iPhones were coming out. Previously my mom had an iPhone 7 and I had an 8Plus. We got rid of the Note 8's and got two new 8 Pluses. Thinking I will sit on these until next year.

The Max is not worth it's expensive price.
The OLED screen (in my opinion) is inferior to the 8 plus screen.
Touch ID is nicer (in my opinion) than Face ID.
The 8 Plus (or refurb 7 Plus) is the best phone to get this year (in my opinion).

But personally I'm sticking it out another year or longer. My 6 Plus on iOS 9.3.5 still runs like new. I have zero reason to upgrade it except for the sometimes irritating RAM issue these phones have.

It is worth the price to me. Should have it in my hands by this time tomorrow.

I'm very sensitive to lights flickering - the OLED screen on the X drove me crazy in low-light situations when scrolling through text. I traded my wife for her 8+, but am now going to upgrade to the XR when it comes out.

Or you could tell your kids "no phones." WTF is up with this entitlement stuff?
Yeah, because I am certain that option never crossed his mind. Get off of your high horse. Who are you to say that his kids are "entitled" based on how he decided to structure his sentence. Wow.

Arent you afraid of the inferior resolution of Xr compared to 8 Plus? For me is a terrible point in the new phone...

Currently have a 6s. I'm waiting for the Xr, need to see and hold it. If I find it to be too big, I'm buying a regular 8 in space grey or product red.

I'm considering an 8+ 256GB. I was all ready to buy last week but decided to wait until I try an XS Max in person.

My current iPhone 6+ has a relatively new $29 battery and now iOS 12. It's working well now with iOS 12. It still has some resale value but that will disappear as time goes on. I prefer TouchID and it seems that the 8 series will be the last models using it. I want the better cameras on the newer iPhones and I'm almost maxed out at over 100GB of 128GB on my 6+.

I'll probably decide this weekend. The Red looks really nice but it will soon disappear as current stock sells out. Good luck with your choice!

I wish the Product (Red) phones came with the black bezel instead of the white.
The 8 series Product (Red) models have a black bezel.

Can you elaborate on the 8 plus screen > OLED ?

Thanks
