Just wondering if anyone has tried to edit D90 footage on FCP?
If so, do you have to convert the files or anything? Do they play well together?

What exactly IS D90 footage? Are you referring to the Nikon D90? Are did you mean footage from a camera that records in the D9 (Digital-S) format?

I'm guessing he means has anyone taken 720p footage from the Nikon D90 SLR camera and edited using Final Cut Pro/Express.

I'm wondering the same question, as I am *very* interested in upgrading to the D90 from a D40, and the opportunity to film a small project here or there (of course using external audio recording) would be quite enticing. But will FCP/FCX edit the video? I have no idea.

Yup, the Nikon D90. I just bought one the other day and I love it so far, but I'm looking for a better workflow with FCP. I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly, but I noticed the raw footage is better than what I export out of FCP.

Here's 2 quick samples I put together in a few minutes:

btw, the pictures are amazing. My first camera was a D40 and really loved it, but so far I'm enjoying this one much more. The ability to take good quality video on the fly is just great.

As far as editing a sequence in FCP. I got a response from a video I posted on Vimeo from a person named Jason Zada:
"Make sure you set your sequence to 1280x720, Apple ProRes Codec, 24fps (not 23.98) and SQUARE pixels. You should get good results with that."

I tested it and it looks a lot better!

Gaa! You're making me want to get the D90 *now*! I don't have the money yet, but every time I hear such rave reviews... I get a little closer to pulling the trigger.

I have a D90 on order. I'm planning on throwing the raw .AVI files into Compressor and making 720p ProRes files out of them.

I did a test with some raw .AVIs from the D90 that I found on the internet. Everything seemed to work fine. The gamma shifts a bit after the transcoding. I think this is ProRes accounting for broadcast gamma standards, as the .AVIs might not take this into account recording off the camera.

Those video clips look pretty good. You're making me want to go out and get a D90 ... but i'd have to dump all of my Canon gear.

Hopefully, Canon will decide to put a decent movie mode on their next Rebel body. I just love that shallow DOF effect that I can't seem to get on my miniDV camcorder.

Plus, when I'm at an event, it's a real hassle to switch from SLR to camcorder. Having it all in one unit is a great idea. I had toyed with the idea of a Panny TZ5 for a P&S option ... but that's more for the Mrs.

Off-topic - I liked the car video, except for your taste in cars. I'm a BMW guy myself, so I'm biased ... ;)

If you can afford it, look into the new Canon 5DII. That thing is beastly... but no 24p! But it does have amazing low light, which is huge for me, and I hear it has auto focus which is clutch.

BMW's are nice... but I LOVE my car! Don't hate! haha

Here's another quick video I did. This was actually done the 2nd day I had the camera.

I'd love to get the 5D, but it's way outta my price range. I'm not a pro, just a hobbyist trying to consolidate my gear. I'll wait for this stuff to filter down to the Rebel or 40D range before upgrading.

Yeah, I was just kidding about the car choice ... heck, I'm hardly even a BMW guy these days as my '94 is on it's last legs and there's no new Bimmer in sight. Just the minivan and Saturn. Talk about depressing.

But I did buy a Powerball ticket yesterday ... so maybe a new Canon and Z8 are in my future after all. ;)
