yeah, unless you need a powerful portable, I think the sweet spot is going with a G5 iMac and a 12" iBook. It's the perfect combination. Right now I have an iBook, and whenever I come up whith the money, I'll be getting a nice big juicy iMac to take up some more space on my desk :) If you think about it the price to buy an ibook and an imac both is pretty similar to just getting one pb. sad.

Yeah I really started thinking about this and I would like to get both. I actually have to have a computer by the 28th of this month so I may have to get the iBook and wait for the iMac until after they actually have some in stock and not with a 7 day wait.

Chrispy, why do I have a feeling you are going to purchase a PB this weekend?? :D Must have patience...

Yes do that! iBook and iMac is the bestest (affordable-anti-iGary) set up! I love it.

I don't think you really need a PB for a portable if you have that iMac waitin' 'at home,' whether home is at uni or wherever.

My input would be to go with the portability. The Powerbook can also be used as a desktop, but the iMac can't be used as a laptop.
I think you should do what the one poster said and order an iBook now and wait till the shipping delay subsides to get the iMac. This is a beautiful setup, and one that makes me very envious!!

Hey there favorite macrumors pal :) I went all out today while in the Apple store. I was going to get an iBook and just wait it out for the iMac but then I realized I would still end up spending around $2400 when all is said and done for the two computer combo. After I thought about my needs for awhile, I decided the best thing for me was to get a 15" powerbook. I know a lot of people are saying they are going to be out of date soon (and they are haha) but I have some rather expensive software (such as QuarkXPress) that is PowerPC only and I don't have $1000 to drop on a new license. Also, I will be graduating soon and traveling around to do job interviews as well as moving. For me, it is best to have the optional portability of the 15" powerbook.

As for the computer, so far I am very impressed. It is noticeably faster than my 12" Rev. D powerbook I had right before it. The screen is beautiful and the higher resolution is a welcome change. It is not hard to read things and looks just like it should have looked all along. The only thing I noticed is the upper left area of the screen is ever so slightly darker than the rest. I have noticed this on many many 15" powerbooks I have looked at so it does not surprise me. The keyboard is responsive and all keys are aligned nicely. Also, I have made a pledge, as long as this computer continues to treat me well and not have any failures, to keep this for at least 2 or 3 years before getting a new system. I have simply changed computers too much lately. I am very pleased with the powerbook and I am glad I went this route :)

Oh, and I saw the 17" iMac today and that thing is BEAUTIFUL! The screen on the 17" was better looking than the previous revision 20" next to it. I can't imagine what the 20" must look like (they didn't have any new 20" models on display yet). Very nice machines!!! Thanks to everyone who helped me with the decision and I will post pics soon :)

I actually ordered both... The New 15" PowerBook shipped out the other day, and I just ordered the iMac tonight (17" 1.9).

I need a PowerBook for School so that wasn't an option. But I really don't like dealing with unhooking cables everytime I go to school and what not. The Value of the iMac can't be beat. $1,199 for EDU pricing is incredible.

Can't wait to recieve both from FedEx!

Did I call my shot or what?!! JK, Congrats, you have an awesome Powerbook. Speaking of, post some pics of that new screen please. Is it noticeably brighter?

I have already snapped some pics and I will upload them tomorrow when I get back up to college (where I have my card reader). The screen is a little bit brighter but the real difference is in the better resolution. The screen now looks like I always thought it should look. Like I said, the only complaint I have right now is the upper left part of the screen is slightly darker than the rest... but I have seen this time and time again so I'm not surprised by it. Goodjob on calling it by the way :) You know me well haha!

Now that's just being greedy! :)

I'm glad you said that, mine's due to finally arrive on Monday - I'm looking forward to it.

You will NOT be disappointed! Even photobooth was more fun than I would have expected haha. Oh, and frontrow is beautiful in person. The interface is much more clean looking than XP's Media Center Edition.... and this is coming from someone who actually likes the Media Center part of XP.
