Took a half day from work to pick up my new phone (because I love the excitement of launch day) , make the 40 minute drive from my house to the store and it takes about 15 minutes for someone to locate it. I was one of ones that was reserved by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE because I couldn't get one for preorder.

Present all of my information to the store team member who attempts to process my card for the IUP application and says it is declined. I insist that there is no way it could be declined. Clerk reprocess the same information on a different device and still says my card is declined. I say this is impossible (I currently already have 2 phones under the program) and plenty available on my credit card. He tells me there is nothing he can do. His manager says there is nothing they can do.

Drive 40 minutes back home (because by this time I have to pickup my kids at school) and call Capital One (my credit card company) who says there has been no attempts to process anything on the card by Apple. Call Citizens One, who tells me there has been no attempt to process an application for either my wife or myself.

Anyone else with a similar experience?

I was declined because they were "Unable to verify credit references as provided." When trying to find out specifically what that meant and what I could do about it, they were exceedingly unhelpful.

It took a week of me calling Citizens One and pestering them to get any information. The first time I explained the situation and what the notice meant. Each time it was "It'll take 48 hours for our research team to get back to you," "It'll take 72 hours," "It takes 5 business days," "You have to wait for them to call you back--oh wait there's new information for you." To be clear, they never once called me when I was told they would, and ultimately the research team came back with was "We were unable to verify your credit references as provided."

So I had to hassle them for a week for them to tell me what I already know. They said I must have made a typo (I didn't), and to call Equifax and verify my information (now two companies removed from Apple). Once I verify the information, try applying in 30 days. Because apparently you can only apply once every 30 days. Even if you made a typo.

Every time I talked to Citizens One they were rude, impatient, and unhelpful. Very un-Apple.

And so while I stayed up preorder night to be one of the first to try to get a phone, instead I've had to wait 7 days to be told to wait 30 days and still haven't been told how to fix the actual problem. At this rate I'll be excited if I get a phone before 2017.

Last month I went to the Apple Store to buy an iPhone 6S for a family member, and my Capital One Quicksilver credit card was declined. I asked the guy to run it again, and he did, and it came back declined again. I thought it was strange, since I didn't get a text alert from Capital One and I had more than $12,000 in available credit. I gave him my Bank of America credit card, and it processed without any incident. Afterwards, I stopped by Best Buy to buy a case, and tried my Capital One, and it went through without any hiccups.

I called Capital One and they had no record of any attempts to use my card at an Apple store earlier in the day.

Definitely there is something wrong with Apple & Capital One.

That's weird. Did you get an e-mail from Citizens One explaining the first decline? I'd be curious what their stated reason was.

When I tried it in store last year, I was told Citizens One isn't even receiving the credit card information, but they just use the Social Security number and your name to run the credit check, so trying different cards wouldn't make a difference.

Had this happen with my Visa credit card. Brand new card, 10,000 available credit. Ran it, declined. Ran again, declined.

Just to try it out I bought a case to prove it works, went through fine. After that they ran it again and it worked. Returned the case too.

Very odd.

That's really odd. So they did it three times with the same information and randomly the third time it worked? This is also weird because I was good on the phone that you can only try once every 30 days, after the first try they block you.

Every time they swiped the card its just payment so the 30 day doesn't apply

Sometimes cc companies decline charges for the oddest reasons but generally it's an algorithm that detects a purchase that is out of the ordinary compared to your purchase history. I usually take a few cards with me just in case but so far I've been lucky, used Discover last year and a Wells Fargo visa this year. I have to say, other than having to wait an hour and twenty minutes in the reservations line the actual upgrade took less than 10 minutes. Much better than when I joined last year.
