Anyone else disappointed by the 2.26ghz 8 core Nehalem Mac Pro's performance?

HAHA -- I think you're right. Maybe this new Mac Pro does suck. I'm going to cancel my order and think it over. Probably better off with the Quad 2.66, or a Mac Mini for what I need and a PC for rest of work. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass - if Apple did this...that is pathetic. The only reason I use Apple is for Rapidweaver. Any PC alternatives to RW? HAHA.

What a contradictory statement. If the technology from last year's mac pro is "lagging", why is it benchmarking faster? Please explain how this is "lagging". And hey, at least you've changed from saying it's "faster" to saying it's "on par". Maybe you're coming closer to reality. Oh and I'm still waiting to hear how moving the optical drive to a SATA fixes the optical drives from being "so loud"

Guys. The 2.26 GHz 2009 mac pro will OUTPERFORM the 2.8GHz 2008 mac pro in multi-threaded tasks. The 2.26GHz 2009 mac pro is on par with the 3.2GHz 2008 multi-core performance.

In single-threaded apps the 2008 2.8GHz will OUTPERFORM the 2.26GHz 2009 mac pro.

:)

No one said it sucks. It's a plenty capable machine, just not nearly the value compared to last year's offering.

For everyone who would rather buy an OLD Mac Pro - go for it! No PRO that can afford it will buy an old 2.8 over the new Nehalem Mac Pro. Throw benchmarks out the windows -- the new Mac Pro will dominate the old Pro 2.8 -- it's so silly to not think so. I think the people who believe this use iMac's, mac mini's, and macbooks and have nothing better to do but confuse people who can afford the new Mac Pro's.

I can easily afford the highest end 2.93ghz nehalem mac pro (which I'm really considering right now, since you get the best performance) but I'm holding out to see what the barefeats tests are like comparing the models.

For all we know geekbench for the nehalem might not be so sufficient for the new architecture. Or maybe a simple update from apple will heavily unlock and jack up the single thread performance on these new nehalem mac pro.

Anyway but FOR NOW the 2.8ghz seems to be the best price/performance right to the 2.26ghz.

So you think the lagging 2.8 would outperform the 2.26? Now that is funny...

Uh, maybe you should check the front page. Anyone who is familiar with the nehalem family of processors could have told you a week ago that both of the standard configurations would have a tough time beating the 2008 standard.

I know you own the 2.8 Mac Pro. So you will do whatever it takes to be happy with your lagging technology. The new 2.26 is at par with the old outdated Mac Pro 2.8...and as software evolves it will pull further and further ahead. -- I'm not providing links to benchmarks - I could care less....It's obvious.

And I could say the same thing to you, that someone like you who wasted so much time waiting for the nehalem to find out that the model that you can afford (2.26ghz) or willing to spend is actually $500 MORE than the model that you could have bought earlier and enjoyed which outperforms it in most cases and is in denial that you can throw the performances out the window and trying to make YOURSELF feel better.

Haha. Reality distortion field if I've ever seen one. :D

(flamebait disclaimer: I own two macs)

True: But I didn't wait for the Nehalem. I've owned 6-8 Mac Pro 2.8-3.2's in the last 6 months. I have a technology business and a design business and I buy all the latest top-notch high end PC/MACS. I use them about a month or two and then sell. I use Precision T7400's, M6400 Mobile, MAC PROS. Price is not my concern. I was going to buy this new Mac Pro to use for my fun computer for a few months. I hold my ground: I would never go back and buy an old Mac Pro at this point. No matter if it's $500 less or whatever. So -- Roll My Eyes at you - enjoy your mini and dream about a real Mac. (By the way..right now I'm on a Dell T7400 with dual X5482's, dual SAS Drives RAID, 12GB RAM -- paid over $7K - so kiss my ass if you think I can't afford ****) And Dell Business (T7400's) computer, build, and support kick Apple to the curb.

Hey superpalmtree, how does moving the optical drives to a SATA bus in the new mac pro fix the sounds they make, like you claimed? I'm thoroughly entertained by your "logic" so i'm still waiting for you to explain!

I've already been through a 2.66ghz 4 core (first gen) mac pro and last year owned a 2.8ghz 8 core mac pro with 16gb of RAM with a raptor drive for 3-4 months and sold it off waiting for Nehalem.

At this point honestly I'm kind of upset on the new performance of the 2.26ghz on all accounts BUT I am going to wait for the barefeats benchmarks first to determine which one to order.

And please dont discriminate me just because I own a mac mini, I've owned a 15" 2.5ghz mbp of last year, 2.6ghz 15" mbp of last year, 2.6ghz hi resolution of last gen 17" mbp, and currently just sold off a 15" unibody 2.53ghz mbp with an intel x25-m, owned a 20" ACD, 23" ACD, 30" ACD, and now I have a 24" LED ACD.

This is my first time buying a mac mini (originally was going to use it for my htpc with my sony bravia xbr6 hdtv) but it works so well that I just decided to use as a main machine until I see the benchmarks on the mac pros.

Sorry, no problem with the Mac Mini. I actually saw you used one and was going to just order the Mini and say F with the rest of :apple: crap for now. ;)

I apologize for being rude

Good luck with everything.

I apologize for being rude - I should have never signed up as a member of Mac Rumors. Talk about wasting time by posting.

Good luck with everything.

I second the "should never have signed up" motion. Be nice or go away. This is a constructive discussion, the name calling and chest-beating is counterproductive and unwelcome.

This discussion is not productive one bit - it's a bunch of Apple Fanatics obsessed over "my old 2.8 has to be better than anything that ever comes out again" -- If you didn't spend 10HRS a day on forums you might be able to afford a new Mac Pro.

I know for single thread performance is not good as the 2.8ghz last gen 8 core but I wonder how OSX really feels in real world usage.

I hope barefeats comes out with the new tests by tomorrow.

I'm really looking forward to getting the 2.26GHz 8-Core with the Radeon HD 4870, and I'll even go for Apple's 24" Screen.

I've been looking at the Benchmarks (so far) and I was questioning if I should get the Quad-Core and up the processor, but it seems that that alot fingers are pointing at Snow Leopard's framework boosting these current Benchmark results, and in the future Ram will be more important.

Take into account that I'm using a G4 (Dual Optical), which has been a very loyal machine for almost 7 years.

When I did a test on geekbench, my G4 rated a score of 969!
But it's the real-world benchmarks that are important.

I'm sure the machine I will rate alot higher than that, I'll boost the Ram at a later date, as and when it gets cheaper.
Would be nice if it lasts me another 7 years before I need/want to upgrade.

Just trying to find a good home/use for my old G4 now... :)

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY BUY the OLD 2.8 (Mac Pro) -- the 2008 Model!! Highly Recommend it!!!!

I know it'll be a HUGE upgrade for you since your coming from such a slow machine (sorry not meant to be rude) BUT the whole point is that if you can find a 2.8ghz 8 core model for a great price you can actually get something thats a bit faster than the 2.26ghz at an amazing price.

But I do understand that newest and greatest is whats sought out for and the new architecture does seem tempting for the future. At least the memory performance is 2x faster though on the nehalem and much lower latency. I guess only real world performance could be felt and have a much more snappy feel to it since its so efficient in the memory performances and especially latency?

Anyways just trying to save you some dough in this tough economy.

Snow Leopard will give a boost to the old models also. The hardware is the hardware, there are no firmware updates to make the computer faster.

So the economy is now tough for everyone? This is the answer that irritates me. He's coming from a computer that is OLD -- why in the world would he want to buy an old 2.8? He stated he was excited...and the 4870 is awesome..and Snow Leopard will utilize a new Mac much better than the old one.....so sad people try to sway others into buying stuff they shouldn't.

Well you COULD buy an ati 4870 for the 2.8ghz model as well.

Also to comment about the economy, JUST because YOU are doing well doesnt mean everyone else is. I guess you have no troubles with having a job or paying bills but you do live in your own little world and dont see the outside world.
