My 12/16/24 Mini M4 Pro running Sequoia 15.1 (24B2083) started crashing while opening No Man's Sky on Steam, as in completely reboots the mini. I've seen a few other reports about crashes, but all related to video exporting. Anyone else getting crashes?

Mine has been crashing as well running different software. I'm seeing reports starting to pop up of other instances of the m4's crashing for a variety of reasons. At this point I'd have to say its an OS issue.

No, zero issues.

- Running a service to bring in cameras that are not native to HomeKit, and serves to my home
- runs a service to translate iMessage to my Android phones
- completes local file sharing with my local systems
- has content cache turned on
- shares Apple TV and Apple Music media
- running Plex
- Has completed Cinebench benchmarks
- finished recompiling multiple 4K videos into a more stream friendly .TS files
- Is my home daily driver.

I saw a reply somewhere that Apple support made them reinstall MacOS but the problem remained. Hope this is a software fix and not faulty memory or some crap.

I cancelled my order because of this. I ordered a M4 Pro Mini instead of waiting for the M4 Mac Studio, but after seeing reports at Reddit and Youtube I cancelled it until it’s figured out. In fact, this may help me wait for the M4 Mac Studio, which offers more value for my use

Reddit, apple forums, game forums, Codeweavers, lots of posts of startup crashes and reboots at this time.

Metal Fx is being looked at as well. The macOS game mode is suspect as well.

Mac Mini M4 Pro (12/16c/24/512): several crashes with restart „SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)“. It occurs when changing MetalFX settings in Death Stranding. No solution yet…

Mac Mini M4 (24/512): no issues so far

Since update to macOS 15.1.1 I can't reproduce the crashes on the Mac Mini M4 Pro. Not sure if macOS fixed it or coincidence, but at least it works now.

I’m surprised by the lack of posts in the thread. I supposed there were lots of affected users, given that it also seems to happen in M4 Pro and Max MBPs

Maybe people that game do not use the mac mini m4 pro. it seems to occur with a lot of video or gaming action.

If you run a game console for gaming or a pc with windows and a good gpumyou very likely won’t use the mini to game.

time will tell how hard it is on video dependent software

Yes, but it also seems to crash MacOS when exporting videos in Resolve

I am seeing this too, no indication of what is causing it. I leave for the day and come back and it shows the M4 Pro Mac Mini has restarted with the same message "SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)", I am on Sequoia 15.1.1 (24B2091)

Ok so nearly 12 hours later running in safe mode, same sets of software; Safari, Discord, Screen Sharing, Chrome, Fusion 360 open and no crashing.

🧐 I guess that means hardware is less likely a cause, but doesn't rule it out completely?

I'm getting the same error too.

I've had one spontaneous reboot and one hard lock (after which, watchdog expiry) on my M4 Max 14" in the first week.

Had similar with my M1 Pro early on - I think after 1-2 point releases the machine was 100% stable after that.

Give it a couple of OS updates, hardware is still brand new. This is what you get as an immediate early adopter unfortunately. They call it bleeding edge hardware for a reason. Sometimes there's a little blood.

Still way better than the experience I generally get with brand new PC hardware though.

Happened again today, thought I was good. Ran in Safe Mode for a day or two , did an Apple Diagnostic with Apple Support that came back clean was good for 5 days and then it started happening again.

I am going to return mine today and have another sent out. The specs on the original are M4 Pro Mac Mini (14C/20GPU/48GB) with 10 GbE, just to add another datapoint here.

I honestly don't think it's hardware - I've had a couple of locks/crashes on my 14" MBP Max, suspect it may be power management or driver related (yeah, Macs still have drivers, they're just built into macOS) as mine is usually if the machine has been idle or wake from sleep.

Hardware test passes and if the machine is heavily loaded it's 100% fine. Normally with hardware problems (e.g., memory/cpu errors) its the other way around - fine when idle and crash on stress test.

Will bet that next macOS point release it is sorted. Mine hasn't crashed in several days now so maybe the recent point update may have fixed mine as per another poster above.

Mines been fine since i got it a week ago.

But i also dont do crossover, or VM stuff, which im hearing is when most the crashing happens.

I've been running reasonably big local LLMs and also using for Logic Pro. Not aware of any odd behaviour at all. Everything smooth. The M4 Pro mini is great, in my experience.

If the new one doesn’t crash, then maybe it was hardware after all.
