Personally think the 16" is just a stopgap for the upcoming 2020 model as the 2016 design has been disastrous from the onset both at a PR perspective and physically. In true Apple form new 2020 will likely usurp the 2019 16" significantly as Apple has lost a huge amount of creditability due to poor design and bad decisions.

Undoubtedly Apple want's to regain the "Halo Effect" Remains to be seen if the 2019 can pull it off. Personally it's going to need to be a lot more than what it should have been in the first place to correct the course.

Apple has played us for near on 4 years, Apple needs do better than this, a lot better....

16” is a stop gap... 2019 MB 15” Pro were terrible in GPU and thermal performance.

This one is much better and easier for me to spend the $

That's a superb reason to sell a 2019 and go with this new 16".
The GPU's are way better and so is the thermal performance (it was addressed apparently).

Do you think the 2020 MBP form factor will change? Based on their history, Apple makes drastic changes to the MBP design between 3/4 years. So this new 16" is landing at the predicted time. I think the 16" design is not going to change going forward.

Well they have to add FaceID at some point which is likely why they didnt upgrade the 720p camera.
That may necessitate some sort of hardware form factor change or they move the location of the camera entirely (or put FaceId and the camera in two sep places).

TBH only Apple knows what direction they will take the MBP in 2020, if it does at all. FaceId terrible solution for a notebook used in the work environment. A phone is one thing a 15" notebook another as one can and does need to guard privileged information in the workplace. When I used a Surface Book professionally I always disabled face recognition as it was potentially more a liability than a benefit.

For me the 16" MBP is ok for personal use, business no simple as that, as it remains far too much of a compromised consumer product.

They are undoing some of what they've done over the past 3 years, which to me is a good thing. I still think the MBP (and Apple) peaked in the 2008-2012 models.

I want them to remove the Touchbar altogether or offer a model without it. But overall, this is a step in the right direction.

Now if they would make macOS worth anything again I would consider buying one.

I feel that. I don't particularly dislike Mac OS in it's current form (i'm on Mojave still), but as someone who admittedly doesn't use any Mac hardware other than my Macbook Pro, the recent versions of Mac OS don't add anything new for me as almost all the new features are ecosystem integration focused and i can't take advantage of that stuff since i don't have an iPad or iPhone.

It's not all catchup. While I am not an expert on the whole laptop field I doubt anyone has the tech Apple has put into the mic array and 6-speaker array. Plus, I am pretty sure no else else has an 8 TB SSD PCIe option, Apple does because their controller on the T2 can handle it while other SSD controllers on the market cannot.

They have done a lot of work on thermals, cooling and heat dissipation too. If the tests show they have broken new ground on throttling, especially given the sleek frame, then this is way beyond a catchup model. Those tests will be significant to the market's view of the laptop (along with the keyboard) if you ask me.

I'd like the expandability and flexibility and bigger 17.3 inch screen of the Dell Precision 7730 but this MBP hits enough of the notes for me and I don't have to switch operating systems.

The references to "catching up" are really more about just catching up to where Apple themselves would have been with this product line had this been the direction they'd taken in 2016 (as they should have).

I think those expecting some radical change next year are probably going to be disappointed. For one laptops are pretty mature and for two everyone ***** themselves whenever Apple makes any changes so even though in the past updates were every 4 years I don't see it happening.

I could be wrong and I'd love to see Apple do something radical but they replaced some semi-worthless function keys with a pretty cool (in my opinion) Touch Bar and you can see how that went. So if we get the same boring ass **** we've had for years that's why.

it definitely is them playing catchup after being needlessly obsessed with aesthetics for a computer meant to be used to create content or do actual work.

in a way they are still behind not offering nvidia GPUs
