To answer the OP question "no" ..

However, I have always wished the Moderators had a "mode" that is something in the middle between "No moderation warranted" and "suspended!".

So many posts I see (or report .. or have posted myself, in my own bad form or weaker moments in the past!) are really just a user needing a nudge reminder to "hey, maybe let's not post stuff like that as it's inflammatory and adds nothing, etc" ... even if not necessarily a major rule violation.

So quickly, so often, defaulting to "SUSPENDED!" really isn't the behavior corrective I think it's thought to be, at least not for good faith, longstanding members.

Life is really more shades of gray, much more than black and white.

There is... typically the process is a member will get a reminder or "warning" about a rule violation, then if they violate the same rule again within a short period of time, it will result in a short suspension.

Got it.
I was more referring to the subjective calls.

Even when rules are involved, how they are interpreted has always been a subjective call and I think that's the genesis of the OP question of this thread. That's how it can "feel" like a mod is picking on you.

I'm happy to publicly discuss this. I had suspension last week for a pretty benign post that had an implication baked into it (not directly saying something out of line). Going back and looking at the thread, there are at least 4 other posts that could and should have been moderated for exactly the same tone and implication, yet were not.

Obviously not "reported" I guess? Pretty frustrating though when that's the result and certainly leads folks (on any side of any issue) to feel unfairly targeted.

This is surely one aspect of the "just report things when you see them" forum policy that isn't great, as it lends itself to mob rule.

Yep... and I agree that is a problem. I just don't know a good answer to that though. Right now there is a Whitehouse Ballroom thread in Political News that is sitting at over 700 posts. So if a post in that thread gets reported, then moderated, obviously nobody has time to review all the other 699 posts. I'll try and skim nearby posts if I have the time.

Yes, this does happen and the mods are pretty good a sussing out what is going on. I call it revenge reporting. We'll sometimes see a member get dinged for some minor issue, then go on a reporting rampage of any posts remotely similar to what they were moderated for.

I completely agree much of this is subjective, and we try to minimize the impact of that by involving multiple moderators on close calls. If I get a report of a post with "You are a moron", I just issue the warning or suspension without input from other mods because it is an obvious insult. Most of the reports are like that. Others we'll discuss as a group and come to a decision.

As an ex-Mod on another forum, I will say that modding isn’t an easy feat. And remember, we do it for the love of gadgets and such, not the ‘free’ pay.

With that, I find it challenging to be called out on those Macrumors news article posts. I’ve been sent messages from Mods stating that my comment “didn’t add value”. However, if one reviews countless posts after mine, those should have been addressed, too.

Alas, I now refrain as best I can, from posting in the news articles. A shame really…

Spend less time on forums, liek playing pickleball, and you will not notice mods picking on them.

Mods tend to focus on users who are chronically online and replies to all topics. If you dont ahve a life then they will zero in on you as you're becoming a nuance.

That's the thing. It's hard not to take being moderated personally, but I do think we sometimes just have to accept things may be seen differently than we do. It's kind of like getting a speeding ticket when there were twenty other cars going faster.

Moderators are obviously underpaid and under appreciated, and I do think the forums are much better with them. So don't expect perfection, just be grateful that it all works as well as it does, IMO.

Hmm, I don’t agree. It sort of sounds like you’re implying that those of us that frequent forums, and post, don’t have a life.

Speaking for myself, I’ve learned that one of my superpowers is helping people online, answering and asking probing questions. And I have a life…

I am talking about those who run into mod problems. ;-)
