Face ID has been 100% reliable for me previously, ever since getting my 13 pro max, it’s been behaving erratically.

Nope. You must be having plethora of issues on your device. You need a new one. 
For me it’s quite opposite. With the iPhone 13PM I feel like this is the best faceID has performed for me.
personally, my 13 pro's face id fails in a LOT more "edge cases" than the touch id iphone 7 i'm coming from. and the nebulous promise that it'll be better in a year or so isn't exactly what i'm looking for in a phone that i have to live with right now.
that said, i feel like i've heard stories of people who's fingerprints never worked as well with touchid, so i acknowledge each option might work better for some than others. for me, thats yet another argument for offering both.

What’s with all these issues arising lol. Your going to make Apple develop a brand new IOS 15 from scratch, haha!
The only problem I've had with Face ID (coming from Touch ID) is with wearing a mask. Fortunately our numbers are falling and that's becoming less of an issue.
My Face ID isn't behaving, use to work flawlessly on my X, XS, 12 Pro Max, 100% success rate. 😐
I'll reset the stupid thing today, hope it's not because of the new true depth camera layout.
Hmmm, hope you're right, never ran into this issue before, normally works flawlessly straight out the gates, I'll rescan my face today.

No problem with my iPhone 13 PM. FaceID works every time for me!
15.0.1 fixed the apple watch issue too so I can now unlock with my apple watch when wearing a mask (i know faceID is not used to unlock when wearing a mask) but thought i would mention it anyway

You could also try adding an alternate appearance, see if that helps at all.
Never had to do that before, I'll give it one more chance, then it's going back to apple, I demand apple perfection.
Never had this issue with my previous devices.
My husband says his is fine. Mine is 13 Pro and working well. I’m sorry you’re having so many problems with your new phone. I get some small wonkiness with the cameras from time to time but I think that’s on iOS, judging from what I’m reading. That’s about it.
