My wife recently starting getting this message on her iPhone 5c. She has always used an apple lightning cable, not a cheap one and she also gets it when it's not even plugged in. Anyone else get this? Is it new?

Make sure the cable end is clean and the dock port is clear of dust. Do you have another cable to test it with?

Yeah, but she got the message when it wasn't even plugged in. I've just never seen that before.

If that message appeared without anything plugged in, then the dock port is likely dirty or starting to fail.

Get a can of compressed air and blow out the lightning port on the bottom of the phone. If she still keeps getting the message, then there's a bigger problem and it needs to be taken in to be looked at.

something is inside the phone most likely. Just needs a quick clean

thats something you shouldn't do on an iPhone.

I had this happen. It isn't the phone port, it is the cable. I went to the Apple Store after it happened, and they said it happens when the cable is bad. They gave me a new cable.

I am betting the cable is going bad. I had a friend who got this message every time he plugged it into his phone. Apple replaced without hesitation. In fact when I was at the Apple store, last week, several of the Geeks were wearing a clip on their belt with 5-7 USB cables to give for warranty purposes.

I would try this first even though the device is giving this message without the cord plugged in. Sounds like it is just retaining the error message.

It's actually completely fine as long as it's just compressed air and there is no liquid involved.

I believe he/she meant that because you generally end up blowing dust and dirt further into the iPhone.
