The black back looks very good, but I always enjoyed the metal back on all my iPods, always put a protector on the screen, but enjoyed the way the back scratched up after use, added a little individuality to my iPods. Think I may just miss it, not enough to not get the iPhone, be pretty stupid reason not to, but a bit of a shame from my point of view. (assuming touch will go this way too sooner rather than later)

Metal = more money = $399 for the cost of a v1 iphone.
Plastic = cheaper = $199 for a v2 iphone.

Don't forget that they also took the dock out of the package too. So read the fine print carefully before determining how much better the new phone and pricing are than the old.

Well if losing the metal gets me an extra bar or two of reception, then I'm all for it. That's the rumor of course. No metal means better antenna reception.

You could always grab a can of Krylon. :D

Seriously though, I agree, but I read in another thread that having a plastic back will help with reception, which I am all for.

It's possible, which is a good thing, just looking at the 3 iPods infront of me after a few months really like the scuffed up look the back gets, but yeah for £159 for a 16 gig can't complain too much :)

I always hated how easily the metal dents on the first iphone

This is true, my 5th gen iPod has a nice dent in the back from where i fell off a fence onto it, but it still works so did its job.

I am excited for the new phone but I too love the metal back and how it feels. It simply feels like a highend device and I love that about my iPhone. Guess we'll have to wait and see how the new one feels when it's actually here, but part of me is tempted to try to snatch up a 16GB v1 iPhone to replace my current 8gb :p

I hear you there. Considering my current iPhone is always in a case anyway, it really is a moot point, but I definitely prefer the metal look.

Really? The only design flaw I thought the iPods had were the metal backs. Seeing scratches and smudges turned me off.

The black plastic case of the 3G iPhone is sexy! Too bad I want the 16 GB model that only comes in boring white.

Once I get my hands on it, I'll be sure.

Assume it doesn't give(like my current iPhone), I'm be happy.

I'm more interested in the over all look, feel and use then any one aspect.

Really, I liked the scratches, the first few were pretty annoying, but after 3/4 months of constant use it gets a nice scuffed pattern that I like and it looks better than a new one out of the box imo.

Don't get me wrong it's not going to cause me sleepless nights, and it's really the only thing I can say is a little disappointing, but it will quickly fade once I get my hands on it, I'm sure.

I just want to see how solid the new iPhone feels. The thing I loved about the first gen was that it felt perfect in weight and not fragile at all.

The metal back of the iPod classic/touc/1G&3G Nano may be scratch prone, but the back of the iPhone(and 2G Nano and iPod minis) are great.

I want to see the iPhone in person to see if the back can match up to the current back of the iPhone

Wait wait wait wait

Wait.

You think it looks better scuffed and scratched?

I think I preferred metal too but I haven't seen the 3G iPhone i person so i cant really comment yet

what ever happened to zirconia  Oh well im kinda sad that they went this way :(

Apple quality!

A plastic dock and 3 inches of aluminum really don't amount to $200...

im pretty sure the back of the first iphone was found to be a high end plastic, and not a metal.

That's what I heard. And it turned to black powder in the blend video. Only the chrome bezel survived.
