I think the new black back looks quite classy, and moreover, I think much-improved reception is well worth the minor aesthetic sacrifice.

Sacrifice, assuming you thought the plastic/metal split design on the original phone was more pleasing than the glossy single-piece design of the 3G.

Well I don't know about you guys but I never had a problem with reception, so I don't really care if this improves it. I pretty much always have full bars anyway.

I like the new iPhone and will probably even get it, but I really do like my current one. The metal is classy!

I am glad they got rid of the metal
Now I will prolly get better reception and hopefully it wont scratch so easily

This is a joke, right? Take a look back at Apples original video iPods and the original iPod Nano (black). Sure they look ridiculously nice the first couple of weeks, but it's scratch city after that. That glossy black really looks horrid after a few months.

One can make the argument that it is all how the owner treats his/her phone, but the fact remains that this is a portable device that many people keep in their pockets. The thing is going to scratch 10x more than the current backs IMO. I can honestly say that my current metal back is not SCRATCHED at all and I don't baby my phone at all. Actually, the only marks that are on my back case are a couple of chips/dents from the phone being dropped. There are no hair-like scratches at all.

Aluminum

It seems that I am destined never to own an iPhone because initially it was the lack of 3G that was the deal breaker, and now that awful plastic case has undertaken the spoiler role:D

I will reserve judgement on the plastic backing until after I have had a chance to play with it, but just gotta say that I would have gladly paid far more to retain the aluminum backing.

Yeah I'm worried about the scratches. White looks awful with scratches because dirt starts to accumulate in it and makes them more obvious. Scratches on black are just more obvious by nature... ugh. Guess I'll have to get a case.

I really loved the 1st gen design. The black gloss kind of reminds me of all the current plastic black phones on the market by Samsung and LG.

I really want to know i making it plastic REALLY makes a big difference in price... i can't imagine it makes a difference of anything more than a few bucks.

I will miss the metal back. I love the feel of that smooth anodized aluminum, and the cool metal when I pick it up. But better rf is a PLUS.

I'm sure the next revision or two, Apple will somehow be able to bring a blend of the two, or come up with a new material that will blow us all away. They're just pacing their 'ideas'. Gotta have something to make us hand them more $$$ right?
