LG has gained popularity for placing them on the back of their flagship devices.
And obviously everyone LOVES it:

"If you were under any doubt that companies will struggle to make a profit from the smartphone business, you won't after today. LG has updated its financial results to reveal that the firm's mobile division lost $67.8 million in the last three months. That's in sharp contrast to the previous quarter, where the company could boast of squeaking a 1.2 cent profit from every handset that it sold."

No problem with the placement of the volume buttons. Does any other phone manufacturer place them elsewhere?
As far as the power, it's muscle memory. I hated it on the iPhone 6 but I've reprogrammed myself and now it's second nature.

I agree... where else are you going to put the volume buttons?

Maybe it helps that I am left-handed... typically I hold the phone in my right hand with my thumb on/near the sleep/wake button and my fingers sit below the volume buttons on the left side of the device. I tend to hold the phone in my right hand and type/touch with my left hand, and have not had much of an issue with either the volume or the sleep/wake buttons.

Because the only reason LG isn't doing well with its mobile phones is because of where they place the volume buttons.
I took the bait and now I feel silly.
Don't beat yourself up. It happens to the best of us.

Seriously though, that wasn't my point. My point was that "LG gaining popularity" isn't saying much and that they'll try just about anything out of pure desperation. Also, to contribute any uptick to button placement seems like a stretch.

The volume buttons on the side have never bothered me but the power button being moved to the side drives me insane! I always end up adjusting the volume accidentally when trying to turn the screen off (but I blame the power button for this instead of the volume because the volume buttons have always been on the side and the power button only moved there on 6!)

Ditto, only had a problem since they put the power button on the side.

Sometimes i think Apple are a bit simple.

The volume buttons I have no issue with. It's the power button that's the issue. I wish Apple moves it back to the top of the phone.

I can't imagine that.

It's very easy for me to move up down right left. You're looking at the screen and you see the buttons making it very easy for me to press them. If they were on the back, I'd have to feel for them. More margin for error.

I hope Apple never does this to us. It would take more of a shift than I'd like.

That would make it harder to use one handed on the current phones.

Also, where do they go on the back? Left side? Right side? What about left-handed/right-handed bias?

No. Just. No. :D

What about to turn the screen off?

Good point. I think by then, I've got the phone in the palm of my hand typically. So my palm is on the bottom and my thumb is against the top (above the volume buttons) when I press the power button with my index finger. I rarely adjust the volume inadvertently. Don't even think about it.

Actually, I would think that most right-handed people are holding the phone in their left-hand so that they can use/touch the phone using their dominant (i.e. right) hand.
Im right-handed but I don't really care the hand I hold the phone... I can use it with both hands without any issue
